Command Sergeant Major David Wade Draughn, age 62, passed away on December 3, 2019 at his home in Boynton Beach, Florida. David was a devoted husband and loving father. He and Cindi shared 20 years together. The joy of his life was watching his daughter Grace grow and become a young lady. David was extremely proud of Gracie’s accomplishments and often spoke of them to anyone who would listen. One of his favorite activities was playing a round of golf with his wife and daughter.
David was born in Dobson, Surry County, North Carolina May 30th, 1957. He joined the United States Army June 25th, 1975. David served his country faithful and honorably for 29 years and 3 months. During his tenure in the military he served in various positions and received numerous awards for his service. The positions he held are Gunner, Assistant Gunner, and Forward Observer in a 81mm Mortar Platoon, Mortar Section Leader, Former Drill Sergeant and Drill Sergeant Instructor, 11 Charlie, Career Development Advisor and Assignment Manager, 81mm Mortar Platoon Sergeant 3rd Battalion 325th Airborne Combat Team, Assistant Professor of Military Science at Georgetown University, Battalion Heavy Mortar Platoon Sergeant, 3rd Battalion, 73rd Armor, 82nd Airborne Division, First Sergeant Infantry Rifle company Alpha and Headquarters Company 82nd Airborne Division, United States Army Sergeant Major Academy, Battalion Command Sergeant Major, 82nd Airborne Division, Brigade Command Sergeant Major United States Second Infantry Division, Command Sergeant Major United States Army South. After David formally retired from the United States, CSM Draughn continued to wear the uniform and serve his country teaching future leaders of America through the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) at Jupiter Community High School, 2004-2011, Vidalia City Schools, 2011-2016.
Command Sergeant Major Draughn’s awards include the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal w/ (7th Award), the Army Commendation Medal w/ (2nd Award), the Army Achievement Medal w/ (5th Award), the Army Superior Unit Award, Army Good Conduct Medal w/ (9th Award), the National Defense Service Medal (2nd Award), Noncommissioned Officer’s Professional Development Ribbon w/ numeral 4, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon w/ (5th Award), the Multinational Force and Observer’s Medal, the Expert Infantry Man Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Senior Parachutist Badge, Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, the coveted Ranger Tab, Drill Sergeant Identification Badge, Gold German Armed Forces Efficiency Badge, Gold German Army Marksmanship Badge, and the Bronze German Armed Forces Parachutist Badge.
Command Sergeant Major Draughn’s military service schools include, Primary Non-Commissioned Officers Course (PNCOC), Basic Non-Commissioned Officers Course (BNCOC), Advanced Non-Commissioned Officers Course (ANCOC), First Sergeant Course, United States Army Sergeants Major Academy (USASMA), Ranger School, Drill Sergeant School, Infantry Mortar Leaders Course (IMLOC), Basic Airborne Course, Jumpmaster Course, Air Assault Course, Instructor Trainer Course (ITC), Operator & Intelligence Course, Department of the Army Air Assault/ Rappel Master Course, and the Master Fitness Course.
David is preceded in death by his parents, Jewel Raye Draughn and Paul Radford Draughn. He is survived by his wife, Cindi Draughn, and three children, Christina, Edwin and Grace, his brothers Winford and Ralph, and his sister Rebecca, 3 grandchildren and numerous family members and members of his military brotherhood.
There will be a Memorial Gathering on Thursday, December 19, 2019 from 10:00AM-12:00PM at Quattlebaum Funeral, Cremation and Event Center, 6411 Parker Avenue, West Palm Beach, Florida 33405 with a Celebration of Life Service at 12:00PM followed by a Committal Service and Full Military Honors at 2:00PM at the South Florida National Cemetery, 6501 South State Road 7, Lake Worth, Florida 33449.
