Losing Dad this day last year was a deep loss made even more difficult and painful by a pandemic which did not allow for us his children and other family to even travel and pay last respects. Despite the continuing sadness, my heart is warmed by the sentiments of all those who were impacted by our Dad’s life. He was a gentleman and a ‘gentle man’, a loving father, a deeply devoted husband, and a fully committed Christian. I do so miss hearing his voice, his laughter, and it hurts that I’ll not see him on this side of life...but the fact that because of King Messiah Yeshua I absolutely WILL see him again, is a heart-soothing balm.

As a child attending Mile End Church (as it was called then) on Grove Road in the 1980s I remember Brother Johnson's always kind greetings to little me. Also driving the Sunday School van that took us home after church! On one occasion, Brother Johnson had to break suddenly and I moved forward in my seat squashing my finger and started crying. He was so sorry about it and looked worried at the time (I was completely fine!).

Deacon George Johnson was an elder at my church. We have worshiped together for about eighteen years. Deacon was the epitome of a gentleman! He was always well dressed and his hair well groomed. Deacon was loving and quiet natured. I have never seen him upset.  He always stood on the christian principles that he believed in. He always had a hug for everyone, and if you forget, he demanded it. He's never absent from church, unless he was not feeling well. Which he rarely ever, did until after his 93rd birthday or so. In a season when there were very few role models left, I can truly say that Deacon George Washington Johnson was one of the few. He was someone for anyone to emulate, especially the young men. Deacon loved my family as his own and we loved him right back. Often times Mother Johnson  would call and say; "Sis. Barnett, Bro. J and I  (or G, as she affectionately called her husband of 60 plus years)have something for you." Both of them knew the things I loved and as long as they were in season mine would be coming. Deacon Johnson loved to play his Hawaiian steel guitar and sing. He was an unforgettable speaker as well. When he spoke you never forget his messages.  He was also very good at making people laugh. His memory of how he and mother Johnson got married brought us to tearful laughter. We were in stitches, Deacon was not afraid to speak his mind when it was needed. He was respected by all who knew him. He will be missed but no one will ever be able to replace him in our hearts and mind. May his soul continue to rest in the eternal arms of his father whom he was ready to meet. See you in the New Jerusalem, Deacon J.

What an outstanding man you are brother Johnson! I have so many memories of times you helped me, encouraged me or just gave me a hug. You are honest and true and an amazing role model of a Christian man, husband and father.  Your family will miss you I’m sure.  Rest now in perfect peace.........

Part 2...

Since the diagnosis of his having stomach cancer last year July, I've had many precious memories come flooding back. Him coming home after work and stopping to pray just inside the front door. His teaching songs to the Mile End Church choir back in the 60s, 70s and 80s. His playing of the Hawaiian Guitar. 
His yummy delicious saltfish fritters on a Sunday morning. His waking me up early (6am! 😮) to push his car that would never start in the 70s on his way to work at Ford Dagenham! 😖 And how he really loved when I introduced him to Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir songs years ago, especially the song 'Praise You.'
But more particularly and specially, how he would pray, and how he'd 'doh, mi, fa' his songs ☺️. 
He treated his wife, my mother, gallantly over all their years together. Watching him, I knew how to love and treat my own wife as a queen...and he truly cared and provided for his family, so I knew how to be a father myself. 
My one sadness is being unable to be with Mum in her loss, and not being with all my family who would have under normal circumstances travelled to Florida to pay last respects.
I praise God that he was in no pain in his declining months. I never expected him to complete 2019, but he pushed through. Thankfully, he slipped away peacefully and is now with the Lord.
I can testify, that like the Brooklyn song I previously mentioned, his life definitely praised God.
I look forward to seeing him again, preferably when Messiah Yeshua returns.

Part 1...
Tremendously mixed feelings upon the news of my dear father's death in Florida. 😢☺️
George Washington Johnson was 95 years young, so no sorrow with regards to his going now...it was not too soon...he had been given the grace of a long life...and I have been given the grace of having a father for 60 years.
Something in my heart still feels missing though...
He truly loved the LORD God with all his heart, soul, mind and strength, leaving myself and my siblings a godly example to follow. Knowing this, brings so much joy. The awareness that he is with Messiah brings such peace despite the tinges of sadness.
I still have the echo of his voice in my mind, saying, "Happy birthday, Dave!" early this month, and "Hello, Dave!" and "I love you too," from one of the last times we spoke recently, and this makes me smile!

It is with sadness and fondness that I remember Bro Johnson.  A close friend of the family, my choir master, who could play almost every instrument.  My fondest memory was that Hawaiian guitar he used to play in church. He took quite a while to master driving a car and I don't think I've met anyone else who ate fried egg and jam sandwiches.  He lived a long and eventful life, but it was time for him to rest. Circumstances make it such that we cannot celebrate his life the way we think he deserve but this little tribute is just to recognise what a terrific man he was. May he rest in eternal peace



I was first introduced to this wonderful man as Bro Johnson. I remember thinking what a nice, sweet, handsome man! As my relationship developed with his son Davey, I realised that one day I would call him ‘Dad’, my father-in-law. I was proud to call him Dad. He made me feel so welcomed into the family and always introduced me as his daughter. He knew how to make me feel special, and made sure that I fitted myself in with the family.  Such a gentle, funny and caring Father-in-law. 
Before they went to live abroad, I recall cooking a Sunday meal for Dad whilst Mum was visiting in Florida. I was nervous because he was use to Mums beautiful cooking. That evening, Dad spoke with me privately and said that he couldn’t eat the rice that I’d cooked! I politely asked him, “why?” and his response was “It was too shelly and dry and if he had eaten it it would swell his belly!” He went on to laughingly say, “If that’s what you’re giving Davey, his belly must burst!” He knew exactly how to speak to me so I was not offended. We laughed a lot, drank coffee together & talked about the Bible for hours. He was always a pleasure to be around, even if he held his point of view and I held mine. It has been an absolute pleasure to know him as Dad for 38 years. I loved him dearly. He will always have a special place in my heart. Now he is at rest and well deserved! I will miss him dearly but I am greatly reassured of the hope that one day we will see him again.

Its been a long time since I’ve seen Bro Johnson, but I remembered
Meeting him in 1990 when I first started attending Grove Road New Testament as
A young Christian.  
Brother Johnson was definitely a father figure to me and so many of us young people attending
Grove Road at that time.  He was always cheerful, very loving and warm and always ready
To greet us with a hug and a word of encouragement.  
He was so committed and earnest in his Christian walk.  I was always so fascinated by him especially when he
Used to pray and cry tears before the Lord without hesitation.
As a child growing up in the church my mother attended, whenever a person of great note
Passed away, the bishops and elders would always say, “He had fought a good fight, he has
Finished the course, he has kept the faith.”  2 Tim 4:7.  I feel like this scripture is very relevant
To brother Johnson, he set and left us such a great example as a Committed Christian and as
A wonderful father figure and so much more.

When I was thinking about what to write as a tribute to Bro Johnson, I so happened to be reading 1 Colossians 1 and I came across Verses 3 -4  (NLT) and I thought 'yes, this is who I remember Bro Johnson to be'.  As Paul said to the Colossians, "....we give thanks to God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, for we have heard that you trust in Christ Jesus and that you love all of God's people".  That is what Bro Johnson showed forth,  a love for all of God's people.  He was kind, gentle and caring. Nothing was too much for him to do for anyone and that was because of his love for God and God's people. He would always hold a special place in my heart.

To sister Johnson and family, I am so sorry to hear off the passing of Bro Johnson. He was a wonderful sweet and kind man. A true comedian. From when I started Mile End with my children he was always welcoming and willing to take us home. He never wanted to see us walk home alone. My memories of him was one of laughter and joy. Deepest sympathy to the Johnson family! I love the legacy that  Deacon J. left behind. 

He was an inspiration to all of us over the years since we've met him. So Faithful & Committed to God! One of the sweetest most humble persons I've known. Never upset, always calm & soft spoken, always had a lovely smile for you and would always welcome a warm hug and  if  you missed him he would check you on it. He was never upset with anyone neither could anyone upset him, before he would get upset he would pull one of his funny jokes out of his pocket. 

 He and his lovely wife were the first persons to show kindness to my four children when we first migrated here from London.  Almost every Sunday he would bring chocolate chip cookies which  they looked forward to. He was their granddad in the absence of their granddad. 

I admired his love and patience he had for his wife and others. He would wait for hours sometimes after church for Cynth who was never ready because she was always so busy helping and fixing everything!
He was so patient I'm sure he had the  patience of Job! I desire to acquire that spirit of humility. He was a Great Quiet Man of God! Humble as Moses! Patient as Job,  full of Wisdom,  with the Love of God.

 We will truly miss him here but not with grave sadness as one with no hope. He was blessed with a full life. We will miss his presence with fond memories. We all loved Deacon!  Be comforted in knowing it is well with his soul! He was wonderful! Rip Deacon Johnson!

I Met the Johnson's family approximately 17 years ago at Joy of Living Church of God. I found Deacon Johnson to be a true incredible man of God. Very loving and caring  in his mannerism especially to  his wife Cynthia Johnson.
I am extremely grateful for the opportunity I had to become acquainted with him. I am remembering a humble man of God with so much memories.  He was truly a man that was one of a kind, a very good friend.
Deacon Johnson was a great role model to many, and I could call on him at any time to give his input to any solution to both my personal problem and to the body of Christ.
Life will surely be different without him in our council meeting to give his words of wisdom.
Deacon Johnson along with his Wife came to the Holy Remnant Church of God and they had initiated prayer meetings in a dimension we have never seen before. He was a very committed man who never missed a prayer meeting until lately when he fell ill.
Deacon Johnson was always in a good spirit ever ready to give an encouraging thought to anyone who desires. May his soul rest in peace!

Although it is difficult to imagine being in a world that  you are no longer in, your words of wisdom and warming hugs will be greatly missed but I hold onto my faith knowing that I will see you once again. Until then I'll love you always and you will never be forgotten.

I did not know Mr George Johnson personally, but through the wonderful stories and memories told by his son, Pastor Davey Johnson I got a glimpse of the loved and respected Man of God he is.

It is enriching to be able to make acquaintances with people of all ages and walks of life. Amongst my many memories of “Brother Johnson” was our rendition together in NTCG, Mile End, where he sang and I played the keyboard. It was not that I could play (no excellence here) but that we collaborated, which was the sheer joy of the whole experience!
I’m still not sure that his sense of humour was intended, but every encounter I had with him left me smiling if not laughing, as I am smiling now.
We do know that time must move on, but his passing marks the end of an era of a generation of our precious seniors.
To the bereaved family and particularly Sis Johnson, know this, that Heaven rejoices and welcomes Brother George, and Earth has an empty void that cannot be filled. 
May his beautiful soul be at rest.

To me you were Uncle Gee. I remember meeting you 30 years ago when I arrived in London to go to University, and from the day I met you to the day I saw you last ( 2 years ago ), you were the kindest, loving and most caring man. In fact I held you in high esteem . Whilst in
University, you were my father figure, looking out for me, calling me, and making sure I wasn’t going home  to eat alone on a Sunday. Your  role as a husband and father were admired greatly, and your love for God was evident. Uncle, you have finished your work here on earth, so take  your rest. When I saw you last, you said “ I  wonder if I will see you again in this life “, that 
wasn’t to be, but we will meet again. 

For my Aunty and cousins, I’m sure you all know, Uncle was an amazing man, and loved by many. A few of my university friends who know him, remember him fondly and also send their condolences  ❤️❤️❤️

I think my most memorable times with Bro Johnson were when we shared fellowship at Mile End choir practice and fasting.  Also, for the many times he went to have his driver's license.  It was only when I went with him to the examiner that he passed it 😂😂  Even though we both left England to retire, my wish was that we would still be neighbours in Jamaica. However, them settling in America never stopped us from keeping in contact and visiting each other.  I have lost a dear brother and friend.  RIP Bro Bro Johnson  from Sis Guthrie

Brother Johnson was well known to the Small's family for many years.  He is fondly remembered for his warmth and kind nature. He is also described as 'outstanding ' in his commitment and faith in God. We offer our sincere condolences to the Johnson's family and loved ones. May you have comfort in knowing that you are in our thoughts and prayers at this time. Rest in peace.

There are so many things we could write about  Bro Johnson, not only was he a loving and caring individual with a sense of humour, but I think one of our fondest memory of Bro Johnson was how he took pride in being the holder of Church keys and  had an unique way of letting people know when it was time to go home, especially after evening service  He would not shout across the hall, he would not come up to you to usher you out, no, he would simply and quietly stand by the church door and turn the light switch off – this became a Bro G-ism, when the lights went out we knew it was time to go home.  He always made himself available, nothing was ever too much trouble.  He always had an encouraging word, he always made time for you – truly a man of God, heaven is rejoicing as another solder is promoted to Glory.  Love Sharon & Eustace

My dad was the smallest ’Big’ man
My dad loved to laugh

My dad was a cheerful man
I can’t remember seeing my dad looking sad or miserable very often, if he did it was because he was hungry, he would say in his weakest , smallest voice ‘ I’m starving Cynt’

My dad and mum together were like a comedy act it was special to watch and have a good laugh too.

He didn’t like to see or know that anyone was sad. He would say softly ‘ cheer up!, cheer up!,
why you looking so sad?, cheer up darling’

My dad always encouraged me when I needed support.

My dad was every churches dream when it came to making people feel welcome.

My dad loved to hug and kiss everyone a lot.

I will miss you waiting at the door on our arrival from England 
I will miss your hugs
I will miss your smile and laugh 
I will miss your singing 
I will miss your praying 
I will miss seeing you smartly dressed on a Sunday morning suited and booted and your hat to top it off.
I will miss you tuning up your Hawaiian guitar ready for Sunday service.

It was also a pleasure to share so many personal moments with dad, restaurants, grocery shopping, shopping malls, medical appointments, trip to New York and barbers.   We even by God grace had the pleasure of sharing pampering moments such as visits to a local Pedicure salon.  Although, regarding politics we did have many political disagreements, he watched CNN, and I wanted to watch Fox News😊.  Dad loved watching the News.  

I can remember sometimes I would be watching something on the TV and dad would say, “What time is it?  Jeopardy or Wheel-of-Fortune is on now” that was CODE for turnover the TV...🤣.  

I cannot think of an area in which dad was lacking as a person, his response to difficult situations or crisis was always measured never RASH.

I feel so blessed to have met and known one of the WEALTHIEST men on earth by God’ standards. 

You are indeed missed Dad Johnson, but not forgotten. 

Ps. Dad your words still echo in my ear when you would say good-bye - “Look after her”...meaning his daughter Grace.  I will dad❤️🌹❤️.

Dad Johnson

I can remember meeting my to be father-in-law for the first time back in 1997, where I was invited into a meeting regarding my intentions concerning his youngest daughter Grace.

The venue for this important meeting was very relaxing for some in attendance 😅(I.E. Mum and Dad), both were lying down ‘comfy cosy’ on their bed with me standing uncomfortably at the foot of the bed (lol).

I can remember Dad Johnson asking me as to why I had come to come to Florida to meet Grace’ parents, his question was WHAT IS YOUR MISSION!!!? 😬😅.  

On reflection when I look back now 22 years later, that first meeting was an intimate moment shared, a moment where mum and dad took me into their family. 

My Father-in-Law, George Johnson is a deep and passionate man.  During my many trips to Florida to see mum and dad, I have had the pleasure of observing dad as a husband, as a father, as an employee (Publix), as a Church Elder and most importantly as a man of God.  His commitment to God could visibly be seen in every aspect that I have mentioned, the Fruits of the Spirit were indeed visibly evident in the life of Dad Johnson, unmistakeable!!!   

He was also, Reliable, Trustworthy, Committed, Devout, Studious, Kind, Gentle Forgiving, Generous and when it came to PRAYER watch out!!!  I don’t think to date I have heard another man pray like dad prayed...  The intensity, the unwearied passion and depth of his petitions to the Father were humbling to hear and observe.   It made you feel like I want to know God that way too, his relationship seemed sweeter, deeper. 

For me, dad’s prayer-life truly informed the rest of his being, his connection to the Father, the intimacy that he had was that of a son.  



Though I have never met you, through the legacy you have left behind it feels like I  know you.  Thank for the lessons, the values and for the  foundation  you gave your children.

And since we know that death isn’t final, I look forward to meeting  you in the life after the after life least we mourn as those who have no hope. 

Until then, may your soul Rest In Peace and may Our Father in heaven give his peace and bring comfort to the love ones you leave behind.

I will never forget Bro Johnson. Such a lovely man.  I first met him when I was unsaved and pregnant and broken in heart. I was hostile and angry toward God. It was a Sunday back in 1995. He was driving the church van and had come round to pick up my sister and her children. He walked in the dinning room and there I was sitting on the sofa trying to mask my feelings. I didn’t really want him to talk to me. But I didn’t want to be rude.  But I guess Bro Johnson saw through the facade and gently spoke about himself and the love of God and His forgiveness regarding himself. I didn’t know he bore a child out of wedlock. He looked so holy and pure. And I felt ashamed amongst all the other emotions I was feeling. I can’t remember the exact words he said. But what has left an lasting impact on me was his HUMILITY  and kindness. He was selfless. Just like Jesus. Even though I’ve only seen Bro Johnson about 3 times since that encounter.  When I did see him, he was the same kind person that I met all those years ago. He is an inspiration. As a Christian myself now, I try to emulate people like Bro Johnson and try to draw near to the broken hearted, even if I don’t understand what they are going through, I try to show Christ’s love as best I can.

A man as humble , loving and cute as Grandad will always be remembered by those who knew him and loved him as someone who made you feel good. Although he is missed, we can be consoled by the good feelings of our memories.

I remember Brother Johnson as a very kind and gentle man with a passion for Christ.  I was in my early 20’s when I met him and he always encouraged me to keep striving and trust God’s word and I will never forget that. Brother Johnson also had a very good sense of humour.  Brother Johnson has now gone on to be with his maker, safe in the arms of the Lord.  My sincere condolences go out to Sister Johnson and the entire family for their loss but take comfort that you will meet again one day. 

I called you Uncle George but in my heart you were my lovely kind hearted and generous Dad.  Thank  you for loving and accepting my husband Garth. I know my children Julia and Paula have always loved you too. Thank you for your love and acceptance of me you always made me feel appreciated . Thank you for showing me what is means to be a good person of faith for the past 73 years of my life. I will love you always ,  Uncle G (Dad).

Brother Johnson, although short in stature, was a giant man of faith. As a young Christian my fondest memories were of him always showing an interest in everyone, always encouraging me to keep going in the Lord, and ending every sentence with “Bless the Lord!”. Whenever he had to go to the front of church to do or say something, He always walked to the podium at church with a song; usually ‘ Learning to lean on Jesus.’ which everyone would then end up singing for the next 5 minutes or so. I also remember the funny times, like when he was driving the van to a house group meeting in Hackney, and we got stuck on Victoria Park Road as it was too narrow to pass by the oncoming traffic. I remember Mark (his son) quietly offering to help by driving the van. “Dad...dad, let me do it” he said. Brother Johnson turned to him and replied in broad Jamaican patois “You? You don’t know which is brake from which is clutch!” I don’t think he realised we all heard until the whole van broke into laughter. Needless to say we made it to the meeting only an hour late, with Brother Johnson patiently inching the van forward until he could drive us through safely.  We all clapped and cheered! I am so pleased to have known him and to have memories of this wonderful man of God. His love, care and concern for me as a young Christian and many others, will never be forgotten.  My thoughts and prayers are with all his family and friends who knew him.  I am reassured that we will see him again in heaven, no doubt driving the van and singing praises to God!
