OBITUARY

Irving Rikon

August 24, 1931November 7, 2018

Irving Rikon died November 7 with family by his side. Irv was born August 24, 1931. Originally from New Jersey, he became a long term resident of West Palm Beach. He began his career as a doctor of optometry but left this profession to follow his true passions: traveling the world, lecturing and writing. His greatest joy was the 16 years he and his longtime companion Laura J. Shepherd spent lecturing around the world aboard cruise ships. Irv loved the performing arts. His theater reviews and his writings on current events were published in many newspapers. Irv is predeceased by his father Joseph and his mother Dorathy. He leaves behind his loving companion Laura J. Shepherd, her children and many beloved cousins. Funeral service: November 16 at 1:30pm; Royal Palm Funeral Home; 561-848-8659.

I got to know Irv when I handled public relations at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre. I thought his reviews for the UCO Reporter were thoughtful and spot-on. It was later that I learned he'd been a part of the cultural scene in Palm Beach County for the better part of four decades — a friend remembered him from the ’80s at the Palm Beach Festival. He and Laura always provided lovely conversation. He will be missed!

The passing of Irv Rikon at his early age of only 86 grieves me and how can one describe a dedicated man of the world who was giving to all he knew and that he came in contact with. My assignation with Irv goes back many years meeting at his various love of theatre productions. His lectures, and informative articles brought many readers and listeners to his educational programs. Not to forget his beloved partner, lovely actress Laura J. Shepherd who I had the pleasure to work with in my production of Shirley Valentine. A combination of Irv and Laura are hard to find. They were like the Hume Kronnin and Jessica Tandy, Eli Wallach and Ann Jackson of theatre. Rest in Peace, Irv. We all love you.
