In a peaceful journey, Jon joined his Heavenly Father on December 12, 2023 in West Palm Beach surrounded by his loving family and friends who were precious to him. Much appreciated cards, calls, and visits were always filled with encouragement and lifted his spirits beyond what words can express.
Born in Miami, Jon grew up during his youthful years in Coral Gables and moved with his family to Winter Park in 1955 when his Dad started a building specialties company after leaving Pan American Airlines. Jon attended Winter Park High School and graduated in 1959. He was active in several clubs and played sports. Golf was his passion and he was quite good over his entire life. Jon enjoyed playing in tournaments across Florida and traveling to other states with friends to experience challenging courses. A highlight of his golfing ventures occurred when he played the Old Course at St. Andrews in Scotland…..on two separate occasions.
From 1960 to 1962, Jon attended Orlando Junior College where he played basketball. Upon graduation, Jon joined the U.S. Coast Guard and was stationed in Cape May, NJ. He later served as a reservist for several years in West Palm Beach. After working in the construction trades with his Dad, Jon attended the University of Florida and earned a BC degree from the College of Building Construction in 1968. Subsequently, he worked for Arnold Construction in construction management on a premier oceanfront high-rise in Palm Beach known as Sun and Surf followed by later years at the Cote d’ Azur on Singer Island and the Palm Bay Towers in Miami Beach.
In 1969, Jon met Ruth for the first time at the First Baptist Church of West Palm Beach after a near-miss accident in the parking lot. At the time, Ruth was a soloist with the church choir, and it was one of those “love at first sight” moments for both. They got married in 1970. The following year Jon started his general contracting company, JC Spradley Construction. Over a span of almost 50 years, he built residential homes and commercial buildings as well as remodeling of luxury residences. He took pride in building his personal residence in Lake Clarke Shores. As the wife of a general contractor knows, their home is never finished so Jon eventually added a second floor after the birth of their sons, JC and Ben. Building was a passion and he continuously added custom features and even some handmade furnishings over the years. Jon served as the founding member of the Lake Clarke Shores Beautification Committee which made available oak trees for residents to enhance their yards and area streetscapes. He also designed and constructed the Lake Clarke Shores welcome monuments.
Jon is known by all for his love of family and church, fidelity to his friends, dedication to work, interest in travel, passion for golf…..and unconditional support of the Gators. He always greeted everyone with a giant smile and a huge bear hug!
Jon is survived by his wife, Ruth Nemec Spradley, and their children Ben Spradley and JC Spradley and wife Somer Spradley, his grand-children Sofie Genevieve and Violet Yvan, and his brother Daryl Edward Spradley and wife Peggy Pink Spradley.
