Julio Otano Jr.

Julio was born on January 16, 1965, in La Palma, Pinar del Río, Cuba. He came to the United States with his family on Christmas Eve in 1970 and grew up in Belle Glade and West Palm Beach, Florida.

On a blind date on New Year's Eve in 1988, Julio met the love of his life, Wendy Lee. From that first date on, they were inseparable, building a life together centered on family and raising two children, Samantha and Julio III, who remained his greatest pride.

For much of his career, Julio worked as a truck driver before later becoming a mechanic. Trucks were more than a profession; they were a passion. He especially loved his Kenworth W900L, and if there was chrome or an accessory to add to a vehicle, he was all in. He also enjoyed fishing in the Florida Keys with his father and brother, later sharing that hobby with his children and nephews. His interests were wonderfully and unapologetically his own: Jeff Gordon, dessert, YouTube, Pepsi (both the soda and later the dog), and he collected enough tools, T-shirts, pocket knives, and "free stuff" to convince everyone he might need it someday.

Julio will be remembered for his contagious smile, unmistakable hyena laugh, mischievous spirit, and determination to make people laugh. Whether he was mispronouncing words, telling jokes, or getting into harmless trouble with his brother, he had a way of making ordinary moments memorable. He was happiest surrounded by the people he loved, whether at home on the couch, on a trip with family, or spending time with his grandchildren as "Peepaw."

When Julio was diagnosed with cancer in 2024, he faced every surgery, treatment, and setback with remarkable determination. Even during the hardest days, he continued to put his family first and never lost the sense of humor that defined him. After fighting with everything he had, he was able to spend his final days at home, exactly where he wanted to be, surrounded by those he loved.

Julio is survived by his beloved wife, Wendy; his children, Samantha (Ryan Anderson) and Julio III (Lisa); his cherished granddaughters, Emilia and Riley; his father, Julio; his brother, Rafael (Nidia); his nephews, Rafael Jr. (Julia) and Michael; his great-nephews, Max and Leo; and many beloved extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Caridad.

Julio will be remembered not only for his resilience, but for the laughter, kindness, and unwavering love he shared with everyone around him. He leaves behind a family who will miss him deeply and a legacy of humor, devotion, and countless stories that will continue to be told for generations.
