Lois Arnita Tindley Garrett went peacefully to be with the Lord at her home in Wellington, Florida, on Friday, February 13, 2026. Lois was the oldest of five siblings. The others being: James Tindley Jr. (deceased), Arnold Johnson of Yonkers, New York, Charles Johnson (deceased), and Allan Walker of Bristow, Virginia, born to James Tindley, Sr; and Arnita Holland in Harlem, New York, on November 2, 1947. Lois attended Public School in Manhattan and graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School in the Bronx, New York, in 1965.
After graduating, Lois began her career as a bookkeeper working at Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx, New York, where she would work for several years. While living with her father and stepmother, Enid Walker, in the Bronx, Lois met and married Fredrick Lamont Simms in 1967. From this union, Lois gave birth to her only child, a son, Frederick Lamont Simms Jr. After the birth of Freddy, Lois entered and graduated from Wilford Academy and became a licensed Beautician/Cosmetologist working initially in Harlem beauty salons. Always on the move, Lois worked with the Liz Claiborne modeling organization and then began modeling herself. Lois also worked as a buyer for the Gloria Vanderbilt organization. Throughout her life, Lois demonstrated a strong work ethic, which she learned from our father. Lois relocated to Florida and opened her own business, one of the first black-owned Beauty Salons in Ft Lauderdale, Florida. She was a pioneer in this area.
Lois was always a classy and unique lady, and she discovered that her true passion was in public service. She then joined law enforcement as a police officer, working with the Riviera Beach Police Department. This surprised everyone, and later, she joined the Palm Beach Gardens Police Department, where she eventually retired.
Sometime later, Lois married her childhood sweetheart, Samuel Garrett. Unfortunately, Sam passed away in 2022. Lois will always be remembered as a beautiful Christian woman who always tried to spread love and joy in the world. Lois leaves to mourn: her son Frederick Lamont Simms Jr., brothers, Arnold Johnson, Eric Johnson, sister Antonett Johnson, stepbrothers: George Walker of Tallahassee, Florida, Patrick Walker of Yonkers, New York, Sam Walker of Port Saint Lucie, Florida, Allan Walker of Bristow, Virginia, grandchildren:
Frederick Lamont Simms 3rd, Isaiah Simms, A’Briah Simms, and great-grandchildren: Journi Simms, and (7) nieces, (8) nephews, and many cousins and friends.
The Lois that we all knew and loved will forever be remembered for touching our hearts in such a kind and passionate manner.
MAY SHE REST IN PEACE, AND RISE IN THE GLORY OF OUR LORD.
