Matthew Donaldson Caldwell, Jr. age 89 of Lake Clarke Shores, FL passed away peacefully on September 18, 2013 at his residence with his family by his side. Matthew was born on June 8, 1924 in Philadelphia, PA to the late Mr. Matthew Donaldson Caldwell, Sr. and the late Mrs. Marion (nee Cazar) Caldwell. Matthew was preceded in death by his wife, Rosalie of 48 years & grandson, Chris Hunter. He has been a resident of Palm Beach County for 58 years. Matthew was a hononorably discharged Veteran of the US Army during WWII, serving in the 4th Army Infantry Division as a Staff Sargent on the First Wave at Utah Beach in France on D-Day and was decorated with a Purple Heart and Chevalier in the French Legion of Honor. Matthew was a member of the Palm Beach County Seniors Singles Club and parishioner of the Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church. Matthew was employed with Pratt & Whitney Aircraft for over 30 years as a Firefighter and retired as Captain of the Fire Department. Some of the activities that he enjoyed participating in was Minor League Baseball (AAA) player, tennis, racquet ball and golfing. Matthew is survived by his sister, Helen Hayes of Syracuse, NY; daughters, Sandy Madsen, Donna Bollen, and Sharon Watson; six grandchildren and one great grandson; and his longtime companion, Dodie Slattery, all of Palm Beach County. Family and Friends will gather and pay respects from 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM, Sunday, September 22, 2013 at Mizell-Faville-Zern Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 6411 Parker Avenue, West Palm Beach, FL 33405, (561) 833-4061. A Scripture Service will be held on Sunday at 7:30 PM in the Funeral Home Chapel. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held 12 Noon, Monday, September 23, 2013 at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, 345 South Military Trail, West Palm Beach, FL 33415 with Father Gavin Badway the celebrant.
