He was born in Dallas, TX, to Bryan and Susan Moore Robertson. In 1986, the family relocated to Kilmarnock, where he grew up amongst his extended family. He was active in band and sports—being captain of almost every team—and he graduated from Lancaster High School in 2001. He went on to attend Virginia Tech to study chemistry and geology.
He spent many years in almost every position in hospitality and food service, but primarily as a sous chef. Eventually, he found his true passion serving senior citizens. He worked in retirement communities in Blacksburg, Yorktown, and Hampton as a dining supervisor, general manager, and food and beverage director. It wasn’t uncommon for him to stay late at work to play chess or pool with his residents; he would strive to bring a smile to their faces, and they brought joy and meaning to his life, as well.
When he wasn’t working, he could be found outside, playing soccer, fishing at the beach, hiking, listening to live music, or cheering on his favorite sports teams: the Dallas Cowboys and the Virginia Tech Hokies. He was an animal lover, and he devoted himself to his beloved dog and cat, Lilly and Slim Kitty, until their passing in 2022 at 16 and 20 years of age.
Mike had a wicked sense of humor, and he made friends wherever he went. As an avid foodie, he always had a new spot that he needed to try the best dish at—though he ultimately had to sample the French onion soup if he came across it on a menu. A self-proclaimed “old man,” he kept crossword puzzles and decks of cards on hand, a tradition passed down from his grandparents. He had many fond childhood memories of family trips to the Outer Banks, and it remained his favorite place to visit and reminisce at.
Over the last several years, Mike’s life was complicated by chronic physical and mental health issues. He moved to Florida for treatment and a fresh start, and he was in active recovery prior to his unexpected passing. He was an imperfect person, but he loved fiercely; were he here, he would encourage those who are struggling to take care of themselves and to ask for help when they need it.
We take comfort in knowing that Mike is at peace and reunited with Lilly, Slim Kitty, and his grandparents: John Gordon Moore and Georgiana Doutt Moore, both of whom he adored. He is survived by his parents: Bryan and Susan Robertson; wife, Carla (neé Craft); aunts, uncles, cousins; and a host of friends and adopted loved ones.
The family will announce if there is to be a celebration of Mike’s life at a later time. Memorial contributions can be made in his name to the Animal Welfare League of the Northern Neck: https://awlnnk.org/
