Norman Earl Fertig, Jr.: Husband, Father and Friend. Best known by loved ones and friends as "Norm," he entered eternal life on December 29, 1997. He was born in Louisville, KY on December 27, 1920 son of the late Norman E. Fertig, Sr. and Viola Stitzel Fertig (later Schneider). He was the beloved husband of the late Virginia Dean "June" Boswell Fertig and loving father of Alice Fertig Auxier and John Norman Fertig with five grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Norm was an Army Veteran of WWII, a member of the DAV, American Legion, American Society of Tool and Manufacturing Engineers and former President of the Kentucky Bowhunters Association. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church and retired from Wuest Brothers as a tool and die maker and plant manager.
Norm spent his life outside of his family and profession in service to others. In his younger family years he was active in Scouting, Sea Scouts and was a Life Saving and Water Safety and First Aid instructor for the American Red Cross. After he was honorably discharged with a disability from the Army, he proudly served in the Civil Air Patrol and was a HAM radio operator during the early days of the Cold War.
His retirement years were spent caring for his ailing wife until her death in May of 1990 and, when possible, pursuing a keen interest in gardening and woodworking. After June's death, Norm became very active with the local chapter of the Disabled American Veterans and American Legion. His involvement in the DAV developed rapidly into the State Level working on the Committee for the DAV Thrift Stores as well as other committees. He also served on the Governor's Advisory Board for Veterans Affairs.
He was fiercely patriotic, generous to a fault, fun-loving and never met a stranger, or at least not for long. Norm loved good food and good beer, frequently attested by a hearty belch followed by "Pardon the hell outame" and a good laugh. Norm would be pleased by this memorial on the World Wide Web as he became computer literate at the tender age of 72 and he immensely used and enjoyed this new-fangled creation.
Norm will be sorely missed and remembered forever by his daughter Alice, his son John and daughter-in-law Bonny, innumerable relatives, friends and certainly by one who was privileged to write this brief memorial, loved him dearly and would have been proud to call him Dad, too; his son-in-law David, better known and most often greeted by Norm as "Hey, Mabel."
