Dr. Abraham (Abe) Richert Voth (MD)

Abe was born in the Ukraine and then immigrated to Canada as an infant together with his parents and older brother. He grew up on a farm in Alberta with his eight siblings. Although his father wanted him to be a farmer, his vision, from an early age was to become a medical doctor. His education was delayed because of a need for helping with the farm. After getting his BSc he pursued medical education at the University of Manitoba, where he graduated in 1956 and came to Vancouver BC to do his internship. This is where he met the love of his life, Erika. They were happily married for 63 years.

He has always been very passionate about practicing medicine but his vision of service went beyond his practise at Collingwood Medical Clinic, to volunteering locally in the downtown eastside and in other less developed countries such as Vietnam, St Lucia, Albania, and Uzbekistan. When extended family members needed medical advice or a second opinion, he was always ready to help.

Abe had many interests and hobbies and was good at so many things. This included woodworking, painting, skiing, golfing, art, music, and fixing or creating things. From an early age he imagined seeing the world and was passionate about travelling. He and Erika travelled the world not only sightseeing, but also supporting others in humanitarian, medical and ministry work. Spending time with his family was most important to him. This included lots of adventures and trips as well as precious times at home.

But above all, his faith in God and prayer have guided him throughout and to his final days. His friends and relatives remember him for his generosity, kindness, gentleness and willingness to listen.

He had a long and full life! He leaves his wife, Erika, daughters, Adele and Kendra (Kevin), and granddaughters, Kara and Kelsie to mourn. He passed into the arms of God one month short of his 95th birthday.

Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Burnaby Hospital Foundation or Union Gospel Mission.

A link to a video Memorial Service will be added and available to be shown on October 4th, 2020.
