Molly (born Agnes Mary Ellen) was the most exceptional woman in this galaxy and beyond! You knew when she entered the room: a blast of vibrant colour, playful energy, and a laugh that filled you with joy.
At 96 years young, Molly — also known as Muz or The Muzzeroo — peacefully lifted off on July 29 with her children, Karen and Trevor, by her side. She joins her husband of 50 years, Eric (predeceased 2003), and loyal pugs Sabrina, Fuji and Banzai, tail-wagging at her side once more.
Born in Therien, a small town in northern Alberta, to Greg and Margaret Dwan, Molly grew up with siblings Betty, Art and Jim on the family farm.
She later moved to Vancouver, where in 1951 she met the love of her life and smooth dancer, Eric (aka Enrico or Pop). Together, they travelled to 72 countries over 6 continents, exploring far-flung destinations long before credit cards and the internet made travel easy. Family adventures included driving all the way to southern Mexico from North Vancouver in 1969, Europe by camper van, Hawaii, California, and Western Canada.
Molly was both a phenomenal stay-at-home mom and a sharp legal mind. She built a 30-year career in small and large law firms as a paralegal and legal assistant in litigation, conveyancing, wills and estates, and family law, before and after raising her children.
She was a fashion dynamo and independent spirit — mom and "dötter", famously joined at the hip, forever on the hunt for one-of-a-kind ensembles, home decor, art, and chunky rings. She also loved sewing and knitting groovy outfits for Karen and her Barbies. Molly didn't just wear style, she embodied it! Her love of colour was amplified in her bright chartreuse bedroom.
Molly was a cook and baker extraordinaire. The aromas of decadent cakes, cream puffs, and pluma moos (hot pink plum and peach soup) filled the house. She passed her love of cooking to Trevor, propping him on a stool as a wee lad to flip pancakes and guiding him through the tricky art of hot-oil fried tacos — the roots of his culinary talent shared with his partner, Mirka.
Molly's passions included quality dark chocolate, Guinness Porter cheese, high tea, and discovering new restaurants — delights she especially loved sharing with Karen.
Molly and Eric were legendary hosts — from holiday gatherings and summer picnics in Stanley Park, to Polynesian luaus and Grey Cup parties. For her kids and grandsons, she dreamed up the most imaginative and coveted birthday bashes.
Molly loved hiking in the great outdoors. As an inspirational Girl Guide Captain for a decade, she thrived on wilderness survival, campfire cooking, and even bunking down in the snow. That same zest for nature carried on well into her 90s as she continued trekking through Capilano Canyon.
Molly was a news hound, British royalty enthusiast, and along with Eric, a faithful BC Lions football fan since 1954. She loved the TV show Escape To The Country, dancing to rock and pop hits from the 1970s and 80s, and bustin' moves at concerts with Lady Gaga, Keith Urban, Adele, and Neil Diamond.
Her neighbourhood adored her elaborate Halloween windows and 55 large flowerpots in lipstick hues. A "Best Neighbour" trophy celebrated her kindness, generosity, eternal youth and magnetic presence.
She was proud "Gram" to Liam (Kirsten) and Shane (Carolane). All four were champion figure skaters, but what Molly loved most was who they were off the ice and the happiness they brought her. Beloved caregiver Nathalie became part of the family, and gratitude for her devotion is beyond measure.
A proud Canadian, Molly lived in her marital home for 71 years. Known for her mischievousness and trademark advice — "Do it!" — whether that meant an extra truffle, the faux fur on sale, or splurging on a posh hotel suite, The Muzeroo believed we needed to treat ourselves well.
Wise and witty, down-to-earth and endlessly optimistic — Molly was the real deal. All who came into her orbit experienced her spark and felt her deep love.
The family thanks the North Shore Hospice for treating mom like a queen — donations in her memory are gratefully appreciated. A private Celebration of Life will be held in the future, and Molly would surely want you to raise a glass, laugh loud...and "Do it!"
