

Age 30, of West Vancouver, BC, died in
Vancouver on December 28, 2016. He is
survived by his parents, Mark and Carolyn,
and sister, Marı´a, all of West Vancouver; his
grandmother, Joan E. Jones, of Las Vegas,
NV; his aunt and uncle, Pam Cook and Paul
Gietzel of San Rafael, CA; his cousin, Kevin
Gietzel of Rosedale, CA, and his devoted cat,
Stella. Alex was born in Annapolis, MD and
spent most of his life in Kailua, HI, where he
graduated from Mid-Pacific Academy. He
was an accomplished classical trumpeter,
performing at the Kennedy Center
(Washington, DC), the Banff Centre (Banff,
AB), the Transylvania Symphonic Orchestra
(Brevard, NC), Le Domaine Forget (QC) and
on U.S. national public radio. He studied at
the Peabody Conservatory of John Hopkins
University (Baltimore, MD) and was a
member of the Hawai’i Youth Symphony. Alex
was a world traveler, having visited five
continents before the age of 20. He was also
certified as a scuba diver and sailor and was
an avid snowboarder. He worked in sales but
was preparing for a new career as a personal
trainer at the time of his death. He is missed
by heartbroken friends around the world. A
Celebration of Life will be held later this year.
