Anne Penelope Amer, a remarkable matriarch who graced our lives for an extraordinary 102 years, peacefully passed away on December 30, 2023. Born in Newquay, Cornwall, U.K., Anne weathered the tumultuous era of World War II, surviving the German blitz bombings of London with resilience and determination. Her indomitable spirit carried her across continents and oceans, eventually settling in West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. For more than 20 years Anne worked at the charming Amber bookshop, once known as Pick-a-Pocket Books, which became a beloved community hub where literature met friendship. Her warm demeanor and love for dogs endeared her to all who entered, making the bookshop a haven for bibliophiles and a testament to her welcoming spirit.
Anne, affectionately known as the friendly, dog-loving neighbor in the lovely, peach house on Bellevue (named by the Rocky Mountaineer train crew), leaves behind an enduring legacy of love and community. She is survived by her loving children, Hugh, Carol and Christopher, her cherished grandchildren Tristan, Alex, Barbara, Katherine, Emilie, Belinda, and Alice Jean, as well as eight great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Anne's presence will be deeply missed, but her memory will live on in the hearts of those who were touched by her kindness, resilience, and the warmth she brought to every corner of her community. May she rest in peace, surrounded by the love that she so generously shared during her remarkable journey.
The family would like to thank Dr. Richard Sebba and Lions Gate Palliative Care and North Shore Hospice for their compassionate care.
