It is with sorrow in our hearts that we announce the passing of Anne after a difficult battle with cancer. Anne is survived by her husband of 55 years Bob, son Rob (Tanja), daughter Kasey (José), granddaughters Anna, Isabella and Ava, sister Karen, brothers Fred, Floyd and Neil, plus many wonderful nephews and nieces. Anne was predeceased by her parents Mina and Fred.
Anne grew up in the farming community of Lundar, Manitoba and was active in 4H which resulted in her being selected as an international delegate which involved travel to Nebraska. She was also active in the Public Speaking program provided by 4H which assisted her in various roles later in her life. After finishing high school, Anne taught in a one room schoolhouse at Mary Hill, Manitoba before moving to Winnipeg to teach at the Angus School of Commerce in Winnipeg. Anne met Bob at the 1966 annual Lundar Fair weekend, an event which included a parade along with some clowns, one of whom was Bob who had traveled from Winnipeg to participate. Anne and Bob were married on Aug 5th 1967 with Rob being born in Dec 1968 followed by Kasey in Feb 1970.
As their children grew, they were enrolled in the Scouting program (Rob in Beavers, Cubs then Scouts) and Girl Guides (Kasey in Moonbeams then Brownies) and since these organizations all survive by volunteer help, Anne was ready to pitch in. Anne’s involvement in Scouting continued to grow as she sponsored a Cub group and eventually became the Editor of the Beaver Tales newsletter that went home with hundreds of boys. Recognition came in the form of the Medal of Merit from Boys Scouts of Canada, National Council in Ottawa.
Anne also volunteered at the schools that Rob and Kasey attended, and she volunteered for the Red Cross during the 1979 Spring Flood in Winnipeg. After moving to Vancouver in 1986, Anne also volunteered for the Canadian Cancer Society as well as the Heart & Stroke Foundation. In Vancouver she felt a need to return to the workforce and was employed as a Salesperson in several retail outlets – the Steak Shop, Writings and Sandpiper Gifts in Park Royal North and then Giftworks in Edgemont Village.
Anne loved helping other people and genuinely cared for everyone she met. She loved shopping and knew the North Shore malls and stores well, discovering items she could purchase that would please others. Anne was a devoted mother and wife and deserves most of the credit for raising Rob and Kasey to be the caring individuals they have become – she made our house a home, one with love and an abundance of happy memories.
The family would like to express sincere thanks to the nurses and doctors at Lions Gate Hospital, and in particular those working in the Interventional Radiology department who eased her suffering and pain during her final weeks. Mention also goes to the Emergency Room, the Palliative Care team and the North Shore Hospice where Anne passed away peacefully with her family by her side.
Anne’s wishes did not include a service or memorial and she requested that her ashes be scattered in locations that are known by the family. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to any Cancer Agency of your choosing.
