Her loving husband Art of 66 years, predeceased her in 2016 and her only brother Jack in 2019.
Diane Cruickshank was a lifelong resident of West Vancouver. She attended Pauline Johnson and West Van High. While a Red Cross volunteer with the flooding in Abbotsford, she was called in to an interview with Arthur Fraser. She accepted the dental assistant position and two years later in 1950 they were married at St. Francis-In-the-Wood. They were engaged New Year’s Eve 1949 at The Clachan now the Beach House. Over the years, many occasions were shared there including, their 60th wedding anniversary dinner with family.
Diane was in the May Day Queen’s entourage in Grade 7 at Ambleside. She enjoyed many jobs and sports throughout high school.
Diane learned to swim, taught by her father, at Dundarave, where her parents, Bess and Jack Cruickshank, met in 1924. Attending Frank Kurucz’s first YMCA ladies’ fitness class, Diane continued for over 45 years.
Diane’s love of sports began in childhood and carried on with her family. She and Art hiked up Hollyburn to ski as many did in the day. They passed on their love of the outdoors of snow skiing, skating, swimming, waterskiing, horseback riding and tennis to their children. Diane loved all animals and nature. Our home was a welcoming place for the neighbourhood children and pets.
After Art retired, they enjoyed numerous ocean cruises in many parts of the world.
Favourite trips also included to Great Britain and South Africa.
A Maui condo was maintained and enjoyed by the family in the 1980’s for 10 years.
She and Art purchased an Okanagan holiday home in 1962 and until present spent many happy times there with family and friends. Diane, with Art, loved gardening in the Okanagan and West Vancouver.
She enjoyed keeping up with the news of the world and local current events. She was kind, humble, strong and a devoted wife and mother.
Diane will forever be in our hearts and remembered as a wonderful mother, dedicated wife and kind friend. She was a lady of highest regard.
We were so happy in May, to have a celebration of her life with family beside Okanagan Lake at our holiday home. We look forward to a gathering in Dundarave soon. Many thanks to her doctors and LGH.
Donations are welcomed at the WVSPCA and Lions Gate Hospital.
