Fran died peacefully at home in her sleep January 25, 2012. She leaves us to “Carry on faithfully”. Children Kevin ( Anne ), Ron (Terri ), Leslie Later (Cam), grand- children Kathy, Noel, Nick, Jeff, Rob, Andrew, Matt, Steve and Caitlin feel blessed in so many ways by her presence in our lives. A strong, independent, woman ahead of her time, she was the matriarch of our family. Fran is also survived by foster son Khumahn Comany, five great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and step family. Devoted to all of us, she offered her love, support, humour, advice and of course we were always “entitled to her opinion”.
After military service in WW2 (44-45) she graduated from U of T in Physiotherapy 1947. In 1953 she came with her young family to the west coast. She began her career at Holy Family Hospital. Fran was proud of her pioneering work there in stroke rehab and instrumental in starting its PT Dept.
Circumstances returned the family to Winnipeg in 1966 where she finished her M.Ed. and taught PT at the U of M. On sabbatical in 74, Fran taught at the U of Vientienne, Laos. In 1975 Saigon fell and she traveled home by sea. En route she met and fell in love with “her Tom”. Married in 1976 they returned to Vancouver.
She became Mgr of Rehab Services for the Vancouver Health Dept and earned the love and loyalty of her staff during her 10 years there. In retirement, she and Tom traveled the world, sleeping on Dutch barges, the northern tundra, and
Serengeti grasslands, making many lasting friends. Multifaceted in her interests she pursued art, theatre, reading, gardening, spiritualism, politics and bridge. She supported causes like Robert Latimer’s defence, M2W2 and Rape Crisis centres. Her faith in God was central to her life and she lived each day thanking God for His blessings.
Direct, curious and compassionate, she lived a graceful life, letting go of the past and embracing the changes that aging brought. We were blessed to have had her with us as long as we did.
Thanks so much to Tsige and Nelly for their cheerful and loving care given each morning and all her many many friends here and abroad.
As she would say “ Blessings on you!”
A service will be held at St Christopher’s Anglican Church, 1068 Inglewood Ave.
