1925 - 2015
Hugh passed away peacefully on August 22, 2015, at the age of 90. Cherished husband of Patricia for 60 years, beloved father of Charles (Cynthia Sully) and James. Loving and caring grandfather to Catherine, Heather, Kate and Erin. Fondly remembered by his many good friends and his extended family. Hugh was predeceased by his parents, Charles and May Addison, and his sister, Mary Addison. Hugh was born in Vancouver in 1925 and moved with his parents to West Vancouver in 1929. Hugh spoke fondly of his childhood and teenage years with his mother and younger sister along with his many adventures with his friends from West Vancouver Secondary School. Hugh joined the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve when he was 18 and went to sea during the Second World War, where he was responsible for radar sighting on the bridge of the Canadian Navy ship he sailed on. Hugh made it around the world at this time but returned home to attend the University of British Columbia at the war’s end. After graduating with a Commerce Degree in 1948, Hugh moved to Alberta for work with Northern Electric Company and then to Philips Ltd. in Edmonton, where he met and married Patricia Hope, who was the love of his life. Hugh and Patricia moved back to the North Shore in 1964 with their two sons and settled in North Vancouver when Hugh subsequently joined Park Royal Shopping Centre. The family moved back to West Vancouver as Hugh became General Manager of Park Royal, and then Senior Vice President of British Pacific Properties Ltd. Hugh was very much involved in his community over this time, through helping to establish the Capilano College (now University) Foundation, to volunteering time to the West Vancouver United Church along with other charitable organizations, to cutting up oranges before many soccer games as the manager of his son’s soccer team. After retirement in 1991, Hugh and Patricia had many happy years working in the garden at their vacation home on Saltspring Island and travelling the world together. Hugh had many good friends from school, university and work, who he continued to stay in touch with up until his last few weeks. Hugh was always well organized and took his responsibilities seriously, but never took himself too seriously. While his work was important to him, his family always came first. Hugh lived a full life. He was and is loved and will be deeply missed. Hugh’s family would like to thank Dr. Victor Chow for the care he provided and to all the kind and caring staff at the North Shore Hospice. There will be a Celebration of Life at 1 pm on Saturday, August 29, 2015, at West Vancouver United Church with a reception to follow.
