Mrs. Margaret Mary Christensen

May 15, 1933November 22, 2019

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Margaret Mary Christensen (née Henderson) on the afternoon of Friday, November 22nd, 2019. Margaret died at home, as was her wish, with her family, friends and other care givers supporting her every step of the way.

Margaret was predeceased by her two sisters, Patricia and Dorothy, and their husbands, as well as by her own husband, Aksel. She leaves behind her son, Paul, daughter, Missy and her grandchildren, Logan and Chase; along with nieces, nephews, two sisters-in-law in Denmark, and friends beyond numbering. She asked that her fond remembrances be acknowledged to her dear friends from the old neighbourhood, from her school days and from her time in Mackenzie; to her Gleneagles pals, her rec centre fitness chums and, of course, to her beloved bridge club, who always included her so wholeheartedly, even after she could no longer play.

Born in Vancouver, raised in Point Grey and schooled at the Convent of the Sacred Heart, Margaret certified as an Orthoptic Technician after graduation, working at that until meeting and marrying the love of her life, Aksel (whom she called, “The Viking”). After that, Margaret’s life was never the same. Through years living in remote logging outposts, to city life, world travel, and all the unexpected trials and triumphs that came her way over her 86 years, Margaret’s was a life well and truly lived. She was a good neighbor, a good friend and a ‘good egg”. Her tart humour, deep generosity and anointing of “trolls” were legendary, as was her lifelong love of music and animals.

The last few years had been challenging for Margaret in terms of her health, but her incredibly strong life force propelled her forward. “The Viking” would have been proud of how she “beat the odds”, time and again. By the end, she was ready to go. Margaret wanted everyone to know that she was filled with gratitude for the wonderful adventure that her life had been; for the people she loved and who loved her. The family is especially grateful to our cousins and friends who rallied around to assist us in the last months, to Lion’s Gate Hospital, The North Shore Palliative Home Care Team, and to Nurse Wendy Lea (who was a saviour to us through Aksel’s last days, as she was through Margaret’s).

A Celebration of Life will be held in the Creekside Room of the Hollyburn Country Club (950 Cross Creek Rd, West Vancouver), from 2pm to 5pm on Saturday, January 4th. Please feel free to wear red or whatever colour may remind you of Margaret. You are encouraged to bring stories to share. In lieu of gifts or flowers, the family suggests that you make a donation to Lion’s Gate Hospital, the North Shore Hospice, the SPCA or any music or theatre organization of your choice.
