The youngest of three children, Margaret was born on a snowy December night to Etta and Silver Currie in the village of Ellershouse, Nova Scotia. From an early age, Margaret’s keen intelligence and love of learning was evident, and at a time when many young girls were raised to focus on growing up and marrying, Margaret’s parents encouraged her to pursue an education. At only 17, she headed off to The University of King’s College in Halifax to earn a degree in English Literature and French. While at King’s she blossomed, throwing herself into her studies and discovering a passion for the theatre. Ironically, she also met a handsome pharmacy student named Dave MacDonald, who swept her off her feet. Soon after she graduated, they were married on June 25, 1955, and together they embarked upon a lifelong partnership that began in Moncton, New Brunswick. In 1971, Margaret and Dave moved with their family to West Vancouver, British Columbia.
Margaret was always an independent woman, and while never a traditional wife, hers was always a strong presence in the family. She lived her life with determination, elegance, and grace and with her always impeccable style she left a lasting impression on anyone she met. Margaret travelled the world, visiting dozens of destinations in Canada and around the world. She was an active member of her community, and among her many accomplishments, Margaret was most proud of being one of the founding members of the Moncton theatre group Stage Door ’56 and her involvement with The University Women’s Club of Vancouver at Hycroft including serving as President. Margaret passed along her lifelong love of learning to both her children and grandchildren to whom she was lovingly known as “Grandy.”
Married for 62 years, Margaret is survived by her husband Dave, three children: Pam (Mike), Scott (Linda) and Lisa (John) and six grandchildren: Jessica (Dave), Eric, Brandon, Kate, Spencer, and Nicholas. She is also survived by her brother Bill and sister-in-law Elinor in Nova Scotia. Margaret was predeceased by her brother Donnie (Elinor). Margaret touched the lives of many and will be greatly missed by both family and friends across B.C. and the Maritimes.
Finally, the family would particularily like to thank Dr. Dean Brown and Dr. Amanda Johner and the incredible nursing staff in both the ICU and 6E at Lions Gate Hospital for their care, kindness, and dedication.
Services will be held on Tuesday July 4 at 2pm at St. Christopher’s Anglican Church in West Vancouver – reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Margaret’s memory to the Trust Fund for Education or HHPF (Hycroft Heritage Preservation Fund) at University Women’s Club of Vancouver.
