It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Marilyn Anne Phillips. Marilyn is survived by her daughter, Darcie, granddaughters, Meghan and Avery, grandson Owen, former husband and forever friend, Gordie, sister Sheila, nephew Chris, niece Gale, and their families. Marilyn is predeceased by her son, Todd and her parents, William and Hilda Gale.
A true Vancouverite, Marilyn attended University Hill school and then UBC, where she met Gordie. (Legend has it that Gordie spotted Marilyn across campus wearing a bright green sweater and was immediately smitten!) After marrying, they moved to West Vancouver to raise Todd and Darcie. Marilyn nearly lost her life in a car accident on the Lion's Gate causeway in the early 1970's but fought to ensure her children would grow up with their mother. It is ironic that scar tissue from that same accident is what led to Marilyn's passing over 50 years later.
Marilyn loved traveling to places rich in history, an interest fostered at a young age by her parents. She was an avid collector and enjoyed research and the thrill of finding a new addition to her collections. Marilyn was an exceptional bridge player earning her life master designation.
To her children, Mum was fondly known as the "grammar police". Marilyn loved the English language and used her skills to mark papers for teachers at West Van Secondary in the 1970's, while also working alongside Gordie in building their family business. Mum was also known as the "manners police". Not a birthday party went by without the reminder to her children to behave nicely and to "say your please and thank yous". Mum, we are grateful for these lessons.
Marilyn was known as "Gaga" to her three grandchildren, who she cherished. Countless hours were spent together playing dress-up and doing puzzles in their early years. When "Lady Gaga" came on the scene, our Gaga found humor in knowing she was the original Gaga!
Marilyn is best known by her family for her devotion to her family, her beautiful gardens, protecting the environment (even participating in recycling programs starting in the 1970's), and for speaking up for those without a voice, the endangered animals of the world. Her daughter and grandchildren share these interests and will continue in her honour.
No service will be held at Marilyn's request. Marilyn's ashes will be laid to rest with her parents at the Capilano View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider planting something in your garden or donating to your local SPCA.
Be with Todd and rest in peace dear Mum! Please find joy, laughter and lots of puppies until we meet again! When we do, we know you will be wearing something purple!
All our love, Darcie, Meghan, Avery and Owen. xoxoxo
