Michael was taken all too soon from Cancer. He’d rather be golfing.
His greatest legacy is his big heart and humour that he shared so generously with all those he met. He is survived by his loving wife Christine, two daughters Carolyn Green and Erin O'Byrne, son-in-law Chris Green and two grandchildren Nolan and Fjola Green. Also his siblings Dan O’Byrne (Pam), Anne O'Byrne, Jane (Jim Saunders), and Cathy (Greg Flower). As a big kid himself, Michael laughed and related well with his 15 nieces and nephews: Daniel, Tessa, Halley, Adem, Dawn, Christopher, Amy, Marc, Zachary, Kelsey, Andrew, Carl, Derinda, Graham and Caitlin.
Born in Calgary on April 26, 1948, son of Daniel and Patricia O’Byrne, Michael married Christine in 1973 and they honeymooned in Europe. In Vancouver he spent over 30 years with the Federal Government in EI investigations and Health & Safety Inspections where his leadership and mentorship inspired many colleagues. Michael will be remembered by his love of music, especially with his choir family, the Harmony Mountain Singers. His cherished hobbies also included golfing, writing, home renovations, beer and pride for his Irish heritage.
Michael's incredible sense of humour and his ability to spread joy within any situation means his laughter is still heard among all that knew him. Especially when times were tough, from the response to his diagnosis, “no thanks I have other plans” to witty jokes about keeping his radiation mask. Michael and his family are grateful for Dr Sasha Smiljanic and Dr Paul Klimo and all the incredible staff and support at Lions Gate hospital.
Michael was never one to take life too seriously, so please join us to celebrate the “Waking of Michael O’Byrne” Saturday April 20th at St Francis in the Woods at 2pm
