APPLEBY, Philip Walter Randolph - Born on July 21, 1932 in North Vancouver, BC, passed away peacefully on August 5th, 2015 following a courageous battle against cancer. Phil was predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Elizabeth (nee Dunne), his beloved wife, Marilyn Ann (nee Robb), and son Donald. He is survived by his devoted son Chris (Sandra), his grandchildren Jordon and Kendra, his extended family, his loving companion Doreen Liggett, best buddy Andy Anderson and many friends.
Born and raised in North Vancouver, he attended North Shore College for Boys before attending UBC, where he received his Degree in Forestry. It was at a dance in Vancouver in 1956 where he met Marilyn and subsequently married her in 1957. They moved to Hinton, Alberta, for Phil’s work, where sons Chris and Don were born. Another move took them to Quesnel, BC in 1962, when Phil joined Weldwood of Canada. In the summer of 1967 the family moved to West Vancouver. Phil then worked as a Forestry Consultant for Reid Collins until his retirement. In 1989 Phil and Marilyn moved to the Caulfeild area with a beautiful view of the ocean and Vancouver Island.
Phil was an avid stamp collector and bird watcher and was active in the North Shore Old Boys Alumni Society right up until he passed. He loved to travel, which he started to do with Marilyn before her Alzheimer’s diagnosis. Phil and Doreen travelled the globe, cruising local and international waters, crossing items off their bucket lists. Since his diagnosis in 2011 they concentrated their travels locally in BC. The week before Phil was hospitalized for the final time, they had one last memorable adventure aboard a landing barge that delivered freight to remote camps on the coast from Menzies Bay on Vancouver Island.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Lions Gate Hospital Foundation, Alzheimer’s Society of BC, Canadian Cancer Society, or a charity of your choice in Phil’s name. A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, August 18th, 2015 at 2 p.m. at Hollyburn Funeral Home, 1807 Marine Drive, West Vancouver.
