July 16, 1932 - July 5, 2016
We are so sorry to share the news of Bob's passing. He died suddenly, but with family at his side. Bob was an incredible man: generous, hardworking, stoic and loyal. He was born in Montreal on July 16, 1932 and died in Vancouver on July 5, 2016. His wife of 56 years, Nancy, and their three daughters and their husbands, Robyn and Gino, Susan and Scott, and Carolyn and Peter, survive him. Bob had seven grandchildren who were truly his pride and joy: Kaitlin, Kenna, Mitchell, Taryn, Edan, Carter and Carys. Thankfully, he had just last month in Toronto visited his twin brother, Gordon and his wife Bonni, their extended family as well as some close friends.
Bob had a very full and rewarding life. He was passionate about family, business, golf, reading, travel and music. He was a proud McGill alumnus and worked his entire career for Scott Paper Ltd., starting in sales and ending as chairman of the board and CEO. His career included five years in the Philippines, a time he and the family adored. He served on many boards, including Royal Bank of Canada, Shell Canada and Maple Leaf Foods. He was a director or governor of many associations and organizations, such as the Conference Board of Canada, the Canadian Institute of Cultural Affairs, Kay Meek Centre, the Business Council of British Columbia, Ronald McDonald House BC, and Vancouver Foundation. Bob chaired the Canadian Pulp and Paper Association, the Vancouver Board of Trade and, for many years, the UBC Sauder School of Business Faculty Advisory Board. He served as president of the Capilano Golf and Country Club and the United Way of the Lower Mainland. Bob was honoured with several awards for his contributions to business, amateur sports and charities, including the Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of Canadian Confederation (1992).
Bob had a broad circle of friends and was a mentor to many. He could be the life of the party one day and a wise sage the next, and heaven knows he always had an opinion on everything, usually backed up by facts and figures he knew from his voracious love of reading, especially about current and historical events. He and Mum travelled extensively with old and new friends, including the bridge group, the gourmet group, the golf group and the cruisers. His family knew him as Bobber, and there was never a doubt he was the patriarch of our clan. We have so many memories and stories to cherish, including our many travels together around the world, California golf trips, Christmases in Hawaii, the 50th anniversary cruise and much more. We will always admire him for his integrity and devotion, his commitment to family and his leadership in the community. We love you, Bobber.
Thank you to all the amazing caregivers at Lions Gate and Vancouver General hospitals. A celebration of life is planned for 4 pm, July 25, 2016, at Capilano Golf and Country Club in West Vancouver. No flowers please. If you would like to donate in his memory, Bob's favourite charity was the Union Gospel Mission.
