Sheila Anne Smith (McClean) of West Vancouver
passed away peacefully with loving family by her
side the evening of January 10th, 2018 at the age
of 77 from Lions Gate Hospital. We were very
blessed to have Sheila in our lives. She was a
beautiful person who had an ability to encourage
and make people smile wherever she went.
Growing up with her twin sister on the North Shore
Sheila worked during her high school years as an
usher at Hollyburn Theatre. She had a lovely
singing voice and on occasion was even known to
perform in some competitions. In her mid 20’s she
moved to San Francisco. She resided in California
for many years until life’s journey brought her back
to West Vancouver. She enjoyed her work during
this time as a receptionist at Empire Shipping
where she met and fell in love with her future
husband - a Ship’s Captain from Louisiana. She
relocated to New Orleans and then later, Texas,
meeting new friends and continuing along the path
of life which included eventually a return to San
Francisco, after her husband’s passing. During her
second time there she enjoyed her work again as
a receptionist for the engineering and consulting
firm Treadwell and Rollo. The year 2004 brought
more changes with her final move back to West
Vancouver. Everyone there was excited to have
her back in Canada and it gave her the chance to
re-unite with her dear daughter Susan and spend
more time with family. Those that had the pleasure
of knowing Sheila will remember her fun and witty
ways including:
• Her love of photography and the search for the
perfect picture frame to showcase a photo.
• Her natural knack for home design often taking
inspiration from an issue of Architectural Digest;
• Her love of anything Paris - C’est Bon!
• Her beautiful singing voice
• Her appreciation of good music and dancing.
She was always one of the first to get up and
dance to a good song at any event!
• Her artistic talent with oil painting, which also
extended beyond the canvas to amazing printing.
We all loved to receive her nicely printed cards
and letters complete with thoughtfully chosen
stickers to complete the envelope!
• Her love of all animals, especially cats and dogs and
later in life her visits to the Cat Café with her family.
• Her unwavering faith in the Good Lord Jesus Christ.
Always eager to pay a compliment and never
wanting to say goodbye quickly Sheila was a wellliked
member of the West Van community. Her
wonderful jazzy sense of fashion was always to be
admired and one couldn’t help but notice her kind
and upbeat personality whenever she entered a
room. Sheila is pre-deceased by her father Robert
and mother Catherine, husband Frank Smith Jr.
and her brother David. Her spirit is carried on by her
twin sister Shirley (Don) of West Vancouver, daughter
Susan (John), grand-daughters Janene (Anthony)
and Sarah (Gaeten), great grand-daughters Vienna
and Iyla and great-grandson Lincoln of Edmonton,
niece Sheila (Dean) and grand nephews Conrad and
Hudson of Kelowna and her extended family and
many friends and acquaintances.
A hard act to follow and never to be forgotten, You live
on in our hearts and memories! Happy trails to you
Sheila. Okay, bye for now…. Ciao! Until we meet again!
A private family celebration of life will be held in lieu
of a service. A special thanks to Kiwanis Manor
Assisted Living, Lions Gate Hospital and all those
who cared for Sheila during the past year. In
Sheila’s memory donations may be made to any
animal charity that benefits the life and well-being
of our furry friends and companions.
