Paul Graduated from Queen’s University in mining engineering in 1961, and obtained his MSc in engineering in 1964. Paul and his beloved Donna had been somewhat nomadic, as befits the career of a mining engineer. He began in the goldfields of Northern Ontario, moving to the gigantic potash reserves in Saskatchewan, onto Kerr Addison Mines in Toronto and then New York City as vice president of MolyCorp, Paul had that rare combination of analytical clarity and sense of mission to build on his initial technical and operating experience and achieve great success as a senior executive and director of Vulcan Materials in Birmingham, Alabama, a Fortune 500 company, then as president of Quintette Coal in Vancouver, and subsequently as chairman of Jordex Resources. Most recently, Paul had a private consulting practice and was director of Kirkland Lake Gold. Paul and Donna have been residents of West Vancouver for the Past 25 years.
Paul was committed to professional education in his chosen career. He was a lifelong and active member of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, the American Institute of Mining Engineers and the Mining and Metallurgical Society. He had served as a chairman of the Coal Association of Canada and on the Executive Committee of the National US Stone Association. He was always most committed to his beloved alma mater, Queen’s University, having been chairman of the Queen’s University Engineering Advisory Council, and was on two occasion’s regional chairman of the Queen’s University Alumni Capital Campaign.
Paul loved his sports, and he is well remembered in the many places he lived. He was, at various times, the toughest fastpitch softball player in the Northwest Territories, the most aggressive curler in Connecticut, the best match player in golf at Burnt Pine in Sandestin, Florida, and a great friend for many people at the Shaughnessy and Capilano golf clubs in Vancouver.
