Zenaida Bihis Dayanan, born April 2, 1942, in Balakilong, Batangas, Philippines, was a force of nature from a young age. The youngest of a total of ten, Zenaida was tenacious and independent, even hiding from boys by climbing coconut trees. She was a pioneer in her hometown, becoming its first nurse—a path many family members would later follow.
Her nursing career took her from the Philippines to Canada, where she dedicated over 33 years to Lions Gate Hospital in Vancouver, BC. Known for her fierce advocacy and compassionate care, Zenaida was a true embodiment of the nursing spirit, even caring for fellow patients when she herself was ill.
Beyond her profession, Zenaida was the "matriarch" who brought many members of the Bihis clan to Canada, offering them a home and unwavering support. A single mother since 1994 after losing her loving husband, she rarely showed weakness, embodying immense strength and resilience.
Though she semi-retired at 58 to enjoy life and travel the world, Zenaida fully retired at 72 to embrace her cherished role as "mama-sitter" to her grandchildren, Sophia and Ethan. In 2019, after a health setback, she quit smoking cold turkey—a testament to her incredible resolve. Zenaida's love for exploring new and familiar sites and her generous, fiery, and deeply kind spirit will be profoundly missed.
Vigil Prayers for Zenaida will be held Friday, June 13, 2025 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish, 2725 Lonsdale Ave, North Vancouver, BC.
