Cynthia “Cindy” Benson Champagne, 54 of Moss Buff, LA went to be with the Lord on June 10, 2012, in the comfort of her home after an extended illness. She was born on October 21, 1957 in Lake Charles. LA, to Marion and Iris Benson of Westlake. She was a loving wife, daughter, sister, aunt, friend to all and stranger to none.
Cindy adored her husband, Charlie, and together they enjoyed the outdoors, gardening and traveling.
She was always ready for a trip to the beach. She enjoyed reading novels and spiritual readings. Cindy enjoyed life.
Cindy attended Northwestern State University from 1975-1978. She graduated with a BA Degree in Early Childhood Education from McNeese State University in 1979. She earned her Master’s Degree in Administration and Supervision from McNeese in 1986. In 1997 she completed her Plus 30 with certification in Guidance and Counseling.
She began her career as a first grade teacher at Western Heights Elementary School in Westlake. Later she went to T.S. Cooley Elementary School in Lake Charles and was named Teacher of the Year for the 1992-93 school year.
Since her true passion was children, Cindy became a counselor at Maplewood Middle School in Sulphur, LA from 1998 until 2002. She finished her career as a part time counselor at Gillis Elementary School.
She was a faithful servant of St. Theodore Catholic Church in Moss Bluff where she was a lector. She loved our Lord and Savior and helped many come to know Him.
Her father, Marion Benson, preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband Charles Champagne of Moss Buff; her mother Iris Benson of Westlake; her sisters, Kathy Smith of Beaumont, TX; Sharon Villarreal of Sugar Land, TX; and Diane Fanta also of Sugar Land TX; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at Hixson Funeral Home in Westlake from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM on Tuesday, June 12, 2012 with a Celebration of Life Service at 7:00 PM. Visitation will resume at 10:00 AM Wednesday, June 13 at St. Theodore’s Catholic Church in Moss Buff. A Funeral Mass will follow at 10:30 AM.
Cindy has been a lifelong advocate of children and has requested in lieu of flowers that memorial donations be given to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or other organizations that provide for children in need. Words of comfort may be shared with the family at www.hixsonfuneralhomes.com.
