Houston Joseph Doucet “Pop-A-Don,” was born January 7, 1928 to Paulus and Mamie Babineaux Doucet in Church Point, LA. He entered the gates of heaven September 28, 2016, surrounded by friends and family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife of 60 years, Ann Foy Doucet, two daughters, Beverly Breaux and Debbie Doucet, and one sister, Vercie Wilkins.
Houston served his country during World War II in the Army as a combat engineer. He worked for Concrete Pipe for 27 years. Later in life, he and Ann owned and operated Mom & Pop’s Sno-Ball for 24 years on Sampson Street in Westlake. We heard children say they wanted to get a sno-ball from the man with the cowboy hat. Mom and Pop had a special rapport with their customers, young and old alike. They knew the flavors of all their regular customers. Mom and Pop shared a special love for Mardi Gras with their family. It was the highlight of our year. Pop had a unique talent of engineering, and designed and built all of our Mardi Gras floats. We won first place for 15 years in the Topsy parade.
He was an avid hunter, enjoying being at the hunting camp with his brothers and his best friend Hilman Lebeouf. Pop was a proud lifetime member of the NRA. He also loved to fish, and always had an awesome garden. He raised all kinds of animals on his Topsy farm.
Pop was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather and great grandfather. He had a kind spirit and was willing to help anyone, and always went the extra mile.
After he lost his wife and grieved for a year, he decided it was time to learn to jitterbug. His daughter Brenda accompanied him to take dance lessons. After learning he then was destined to meet Gloria, they danced until he could dance no more. He will be greatly missed by his family and all of his dancing friends from the Habibi Temple.
Those left to cherish his memory include his sons, Doug (Cassie) and Dan (Jeannine); daughters, Wanda and Brenda; eight grandchildren, Brandi, Ginger, Stacy, Candice, Brian, Jake, Aimee and AnnaB; and fourteen great grandchildren; siblings, George Doucet, Wilridge Doucet, and Nelda McManus; and many nieces and nephews.
