It was so wonderful that John and Mabel were able to drive to Phoenix to witness Megan and John’s marriage. I remember that glorious motorcycle and how much fun he had seeing the sights and museums in Arizona. Most importantly, I remember meeting John for the first time and immediately feeling his kindness and love for his family. He was an amazing man with a beautiful soul.

Mabel Grace: I was sitting here thinking about your wedding. Somehow I remember the song "Devoted to You." I had never heard it before but thought it was so pretty. In your younger years you were almost a part of our family. May God comfort you as you mourn the loss of your husband at such a young age. I too was a widow at a young age. God will walk you through this. The Grout family was well thought of in Iowa LA. I did not realize that John was a part of that family. Praying for you and your children.

Truly a sad day. John was a good neighbor, a good friend, and an even better person who will be deeply missed by all who knew him. May you "Rest in Peace" John; your tour of duty is complete, and you have earned it.

One summer Helena and John (Wilson) talked me into coming to Lafayette for their summer marching band performance. They’d been there all week learning the show and attending meant I’d be riding by myself from Westlake with their family. I was a little nervous, but it ended up being my favorite memory of that summer. Mr. Johnny treated me like a third daughter all day—right down to yelling “U-ie!” as he suddenly changed directions in seven lanes of bumper-to-bumper traffic and scaring me half to death. He laughed for two full blocks. Bayouland had the contract for photographing each formation of the marching performance and, knowing I loved photography, Mr. Johnny took me with him to the press box and handed me a camera—a FILM camera, in the days when being so generous came with a lot more risk had I messed up. It was such a sweet gesture and one I still appreciate very much.

As a parent now, I’ve learned to appreciate the people who love my children without blood relation or expectation of personal benefit in return, the people who share time and experience to help them grow and learn. Looking back, I’m thankful Mr. Johnny and Miss Mable were part of that group of people for me.

John, my old friend
We went through many years working together on the 4-12 shift and many events together involving the Calcasieu Parish Honor Guard. Every time you played TAPS it always sent a chill down my spine. Thanks for always being there for me when I needed help with something. I know you are up in heaven talking about the old days with Bryan (Bear) Hebert
R.I.P. my brother in blue
