Louise was the daughter of Wilburn and Myrtle Givens and was born on Christmas day, December 25, 1918 in Bowie, Texas. She lived in North Texas and for a brief time in Kansas. She attended school in Wichita Falls, Texas graduating in 1936. She married in 1939 and became a home maker in Wichita Falls. Louise took up golf and was the first woman to score a hole-in-one on Weeks Park Municipal Golf Course in Wichita Falls. The family was transferred by Conoco Oil Company in 1961 to Westlake, LA. Louise and her husband lived in Spain for a year for Conoco. During this time they traveled extensively in Europe and North Africa. In 1967 she started work as a postal carrier in Westlake and became well known in town. In 1975 the American Business Women’s Association named her Woman of the Year. She retired from the Post Office in 1981. After eight years of retirement she moved to Plantation Country Club in Pharr, Texas to play golf. She moved back to Westlake in 1999, living over 47 years total in Westlake. Louise was a member of The First Baptist Church of Westlake. Her faith and love of the Lord was evident by the way she lived her life and followed the commandment “Love thy neighbor as thyself.” She was a strong caring woman and her love and compassion touched many including family, friends and strangers.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wilburn Givens of Wichita Falls, TX; two brothers, Elmer Givens and Homer Givens of Wichita Falls, TX and her husband of 66 years, Vernie L. Bryan of Westlake.
She leaves to celebrate her life and mourn her passing her daughter and son-in-law, Jeanette and Philip Ivey of Westlake; three grandchildren, Chris Ivey and wife, Stella of Carlyss, LA, Terri Kelly and husband, Kenneth of Porter, TX, Bryan Ivey and wife, Lisa of Houston, TX; six great grandchildren; one brother-in-law, G.H. Bryan Jr. and wife, Iris of Texas City, TX; two sisters-in-law, Margret Givens of Wichita Falls, TX and Doris Koteek of Pearland, TX and Her many friends through the years and her beloved karaoke Group that gave her such enjoyment with many laughs and good times in her later years.
Visitation will be at Hixson Funeral Home of Westlake on Saturday, December 17, 2011 from 6-8 p.m. Funeral Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, December 18, 2011 at Hixson Funeral Home of Westlake. Burial will follow at Westlake Memorial Gardens. The family would like to express their gratitude and thanks to Odyssey Hospice, the Nursing Staff of Cal-Cam Hospital and most of all to “Miss Sunshine” Chalayne Odom and her co-workers at Southern Home Health.
