In the early morning hours of December 28, Barbara Kovacic (nee Ward) quietly slipped away after battling ALS for over six months. Barbara is reunited with her husband of almost 67 years, Edward P. Kovacic, who passed away on September 30, 2018. She is the daughter of Jack and Gertrude Ward (both deceased). Barbara left behind her loving children, Mary Denihan (Bill), Edward J. (Sharon Neu), Daniel (fiancé Dorothy Hale), Thomas (Barbara), Noreen Prescott (Jon), and Coleen Nola (Jim). Barbara was a loving and doting grandmother of 12 and is preceded in death by her oldest granddaughter, Tracey Vukovic. Her family legacy includes being a great-grandmother of 11. Barbara is the dear sister of Patricia Angelotti (David, deceased), Jack Ward deceased (Marie), Ginger Griebeler (Elmer), Nancy Olsen (Thomas), Timothy (Carol deceased), Terrence (deceased), Rita DeJulius (Dennis), Susan Mahoney (Patrick), Peggy, Kevin (deceased). She is a much loved Aunt by many nieces and nephews. Barbara volunteered as a teacher’s aide for St. Jerome’s school and later in life joined the workforce. She was an avid supporter of the Police Memorial, the Cleveland Police Pipe and Drum Band and the Cleveland Police Foundation. She truly was “the woman behind the man” in encouraging her husband Ed to join the Cleveland Police Department and raise himself through the ranks. She loved being the wife of the Chief of Police, but more than that, she loved being a wife, mother and grandmother. Her family will cherish her last words to each and every one of them, a simple and heartfelt “I love you”. We did not hear about Barbara's death until yesterday (Jan. 13, 2019). How we wish that we could have heard the news in time so that we could have attended her funeral, as we did for Ed. Barbara was such a wonderful lady ---so strong and so filled with energy and enthusiasm. God rest her beautiful soul. Now she and Ed can enjoy eternal bliss together. We love you, Barbara.

Sad to hear of your loss. A great woman, dedicated to her family, friends, community and law enforcement officers everywhere, especially the Cleveland PD. Her loving, caring ways and sense of humor will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Rest in Eternal Peace Barb.

I first met Barb when I got a call from the Community Policing Office to assist the Chief's wife with a flat tire at their home. I changed her tire she wanted to know what she owed me and of course I said nothing and she proceeded on her way to work. The next day she tracked me down while working and handed me a wrapped present containing a bottle of Windsor and insisted I take it. We became friends and even after we all retired and I began working for the Cleveland Police Foundation part time we stayed in touch because her and the Chief attended all our Cops for Kids Events. Two wonderful individuals that were made for each other....RIP.

I met Barb ("Mudder") when she first came to work at Ernst & Young where we became great friends. She could work circles around a lot of the young people there and could be just as bossy (but everyone loved her anyway). I loved her like a mother and she will be greatly missed.
