Dale was welcomed to heaven by his father Zino Meggas, mother Rita Meggas Tierney (nee McManamon), stepfather Jim Tierney, niece Megan Busa, and father-in-law Richard Van Hala. He is survived by his wife Barbara (Van Hala), daughters Lindsay Meggas (Joe Trela) and Jamie Meggas, son Kyle Meggas, sister Sherri Busa-Whitehead (Dan), (nee Meggas), and niece Elyse Busa.
Dale, a Cleveland native, was a proud graduate of West Tech High School and was inducted into West Tech’s Hall of Fame. Dale earned his bachelor’s degree in journalism from The Ohio State University and his Master's degree in sports administration from Western Illinois University.
Dale was an accomplished and well-known sportswriter in Cleveland, covering the Cleveland sports scene for over 25 years at the Sun Newspapers, Plain Dealer and major wire services. He most recently was a regular writer to Press Pros Magazine. Dale was the most authentic fan of sports the world has known – you could always find him on his chair fine-tuning the AM radio to find any game he could and listen into the night.
For years, his column “20/20 Hindsight” in the Sun Newspapers was his outlet to express his many opinions on the happenings in the sports world - both locally, and nationally. His ultimate pleasure was getting the privilege to cover the athletic pursuits of his children and their friends at Lakewood High School over the years!
After his retirement from the Sun, he would say he was “on the back nine” of his life – but we weren’t ready for him to sign his scorecard so soon. We will remember and cherish our times with Dale as a loving and doting husband, father, brother and uncle – we will all miss the infectious laugh, quick wit,
numerous stories, and well-developed soapboxes that captivated us each time we shared a couch, a dinner table, bleacher seat, or road trip with Dale.
