Katie is predeceased by her mother Mary Ann (Koehl) Hebing.
Katie’s life was defined by her commitment and service to her large, devoted family. She was born on September 22, 1941, and grew up in Cleveland Heights. She attended the inaugural class of Magnificat High School and graduated with top honors. She was proud to see her daughters and granddaughters follow in her footsteps at Magnificat, where alumnus Deborah Norton has led major fundraising events for more than a decade. Katie attended Notre Dame College. She met and married Bill in 1966, and they settled and raised their five children in Rocky River.
Katie had phenomenal skills in organizing and planning a busy household with five children. She managed the family’s finances and worked as a bookkeeper for Conway, Patton, Bouhall and Reichard as well as St. Jerome’s Church. She coordinated her children’s daily schedules for school, sports, music, scouts and other activities. She made home-cooked meals and ensured everyone gathered for family dinner. Katie also stepped forward to coach the girls’ basketball team at St. Bernadette’s School for 17 years. Her strong belief in the importance of education and developing oneself through academics, athletics and the arts – combined with her unconditional love – created a strong foundation for her children to grow and succeed and gave them a template for raising their own children.
As she juggled raising multiple children at the same time, Katie made sure her home was beautiful, welcoming, and full of celebration. She was an excellent cook and baker, and a gracious host of innumerable holiday meals. To this day, her recipes are sought out and recreated by generations of family members. She was a voracious reader of historical non-fiction and novels and enjoyed tending her garden. Katie loved music and was often seen first on the dance floor or bopping to her favorite music in the car. She also had a flair for fashion with an elegant yet unassuming style.
Katie always relished a good family party and playtime with her young grandchildren, which included rambunctious scenes of chasing, tickling and giggling. She had an infectious laugh and radiant smile which drew people to her. At midlife, she loved aerobic dancing which combined her physical strength and agility with love of music and dance which kept her in great shape.
She was known to quickly raise her hand to help a family member move, including carrying heavy furniture up flights of stairs and painting countless rooms over the years. Katie was the steadfast, loving anchor for her family during both difficult times and the joyful milestones of life.
Katie was a devoted Catholic and parishioner and eucharistic minister at St. Bernadette’s Church in Westlake. Her faith was important in shaping her values of kindness, generosity, humility and loyalty to her beloved family and friends over the decades. Her faith in God helped her during difficult times, including the death of her beloved mother, and she modeled this for her children.
