Hanni grew up on a farm, but life there was difficult and sorrowful, and she often went to bed hungry and cold. As a young adult, Hanni managed a deli and market, but had her eyes focused on the American Dream. At the age of 25 she was sponsored by a family in Woodland Hills, left her homeland behind, moved to the United States and changed her name to “Anna” as it was easier for the Americans to pronounce.
Anna met her husband, Anthony Borrego at the Ventura County Sheriff’s station when she went there to lodge a complaint about someone following her. She said it was love at first sight for her when she saw that tall, dark and handsome man with the gorgeous smile. They married in 1965 and were together 54 years until 2019 when Tony passed. They were blessed with two children, Carmen and Mark, and they spent nearly their entire life together in Newbury Park.
Anna held waitressing jobs at DuPar’s and Los Robles Inn while raising her children. She later became the head chef for the Head Start program In Oxnard which provides child development services to low-income preschool age children. As much as she loved working with those beautiful children, she had her heart set on becoming a nurse. When her own kids were in college, Anna decided to pursue her dream too. She went to nursing school and became a Registered Nurse in 1988 at the age of 50. She worked at Simi Adventist and Los Robles Hospitals, later earning her Critical Care RN certification. Nursing was her passion and true calling. It was her gift that she shared endlessly with everyone who knew her, and not just in the clinical setting. She would drive elderly friends to doctor appointments, make house calls and provide care to those who were sick or housebound. Even into her early 80’s she was checking blood pressure, doling out nutrition and medical advice, caring in meaningful ways for those around her, and always providing comfort to others.
Anna will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. She is survived by her children Carmen and Mark, and her four grandchildren Clint Barton, Brock Barton, Sophia Borrego, and Sydney Borrego.
Funeral services for Anna will be held on April 12, 2025 at 10 a.m. in the Chapel at Pierce Brothers Valley Oaks Memorial Park, 5600 Lindero Canyon Rd, Westlake Village, CA 91362. Interment to follow immediately after.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Anna’s honor to Samaritan’s Purse (samaritanspurse.org). Like Anna, they are driven to help those in crisis/need with food, medicine, and other assistance in the name of Jesus Christ.
