Bertha passed away on August 29th, 2011 at the age of 82 in the comfort of her home surrounded by loved ones in Oak Park, CA. She was born on November 18th, 1928 in Belgium-France. Victor and Marie Hofferlin raised her in a small farming village until the age of eleven when the Hofferlin family moved to the United States and settled in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Her sister Nelly and brother John survive their sibling Bertha.
Bertha was a friendly and caring person that always extended a helping hand. She began working at a young age and became a very independent woman. Bertha moved to the West Coast and bought a house in Culver City, CA. Her neighbor introduced her to Stuart Wiley who she married and had two children, James and Victor. She was a wonderful one of a kind mother who made every effort to support her family to the fullest. Bertha was a housewife for many years but when her children were teenagers she returned to work at the local high school preparing food for students. She retired from the school district at 70 years old and became a volunteer at the senior center where she prepared and served meals to other seniors. She made many friends at the senior center over the last decade.
Bertha will be remembered as a loving and caring person who went out of her way to help others without ever expecting anything in return. My mother is my hero and the best example of a true and caring person. We will miss having her beside us on this earth, but she will be forever remembered and remain in our hearts.
The family requests live plants in lieu of flowers in honor of Bertha's memory.
Arrangements under the direction of Pierce Brothers Valley Oaks Mortuary, Westlake Village, CA.
