Home Goods lost a loyal customer on July 13, 2016 when Cheryl McCurdy passed away after a five-year battle with pancreatic cancer. Renowned for her craftiness, decorating and party-throwing prowess, Cheryl was a devoted wife to Robert Kim for 44 years, and mother to Michael, Melissa, Katie and Chad.
Cheryl’s journey to domestic goddess began on December 14, 1954 in Santa Monica, where she was born to Donald and Sue Smith. She grew up in Woodland Hills alongside her three siblings, Candy, Cathy and Gary, and the family business, Smith Pipe and Supply. Before she was old enough to drive, she caught the eye of the boy next door, and at 17, married “Kim.” At 18, she gave birth to the couple’s oldest son, Michael.
Cheryl went on to fulfill many roles in her 62 years: mother, sister, friend, team mom, wedding planner, taxi driver, grandmother, florist, and vice president at Smith Pipe. Her door was always open to friends and family and her home was always a hub of social activity and interaction. Officially a mom to 4, she was “Mama Cheryl” and “Grandma Cheryl” to countless others.
She loved having people together and interacting with friends and family, and often hosted these gatherings. Be it a boating trip to the lake or a baby shower in the backyard, Cheryl left no stone unturned to make sure her guests were well-taken care of and that everyone enjoyed themselves. Her quick smile and friendly demeanor made her fast friends with everyone she met.
Cheryl loved the creative process and thoroughly enjoyed making moments, experiences and relationships that were beautiful. She took great pride in everything she did, and always made sure it was executed to perfection. She leaves a legacy of well-packed lunches and well-stocked snack drawers, countless parties with table linens in every color, emergency preparedness that was unmatched – with a wipey for any occasion, and a warm feeling and smile for everyone she met.
