Dan Hugh Graves

July 10, 1941June 24, 2020

Dan Hugh Graves, 78, passed away June 24, 2020 in Thousand Oaks, CA where he resided. He was the son of Clayton Stewart Graves and Anne Simmons Graves born on July 10, 1941 in Amarillo, TX. His parents preceded him in death. He is survived by his son, Christopher S. Graves, of Glastonbury, CT, and ex-wife, Maureen Graves, the mother of his only child, from Henderson, NV. He is also survived by his sister, Susan Lee (Howard) Groff, niece and nephews, Debbie (Scott) Steinhardt, Michael (Pamela) Groff and Robert (Jodi) Groff. His significant other of nearly 23 years, Janice Lee Horton survives, along with her daughter, Jennifer Horton (Franco) Uccelli and significant grandchildren, Isabella, Matteo and Ian Uccelli, all of Miami, FL.

Mr. Graves attended elementary schools in the San Fernando Valley except for two years at the American School in Cairo, Egypt when his father Captain Graves flew with Trans World Airlines. He graduated from Reseda High School in 1959 prior to his military service with the United States Air Force. In 1968 he joined Rockwell International and their predecessors from which he retired after a stellar career of 31 years. During retirement, he and Jan traveled in and out of United States with many monthly trips Coast-to-Coast. His favorite place was Kapaa, Kauai, Hawaii where they visited annually along with the other islands. Because of the COVID 19 restrictions, a memorial will be planned at a future date and his ashes interred in the Topatopa Mountains near the Santa Paula Ridge and in his beloved Kauai, HI. Memorials may be made in his name to one’s favorite charity.

I wrote this a week ago and it didn’t upload so I’m redoing it. Dear grandpa dan, I will always miss you. I loved to travel with you to hawaii and the desert. I remember going to Kauai in 2016 and getting the matching blue dolphin t-shirts. I miss and love you, Ian.

Dan always impressed us with the way he cared for Aunt Jan. We loved his stories about people and places important to him and met them many times in St. Louis, Springfield, Miami. We are saddened by his passing. Memories of his smile and laughter will always be with us. Our condolences to Aunt Jan, our Uccelli cousins, Chris, Sue and family.

Sending my sympathy to all of Dan's family. Jan is a good friend of mine and I have helped her with her Christmas letter for quite a few years now. Through her I was able to get to know Dan even though I never had the chance to meet him. I know that all of you will miss him very much. I recently lost my husband unexpectedly and know some of what all of you are feeling right now. I hope that you will cherish all your memories of times with Dan as they will give you much comfort right now. Rejoice that he was in your life and that he had a long and good life to share with you. Know he loved you as much as you loved him. (I live in Springfield, Illinois)

When Dan passed, I lost my de facto father-in-law, but his spirit and the warmth of his smile will always be with us. I will forever cherish the countless memories of all the wonderful times we spent together. May you rest in peace Dan.

It was our pleasure to get to know Dan in person when we and Dan and Jan were in the same state together! When we were with Jan and they were apart, we noticed she always made time to call him each day - and he was always there to get each call. Jan's yearly Christmas newsletters documented their amazing schedule of comings and goings that are now memories of happy times well spent. Our sincere condolences to you all.

Dan was a special person who was easy to get to know. We enjoyed your visit to Wisconsin on your trip around Lake Michigan. Our condolences to you, Jan, along with Dan’s son, sister and family and Jennifer and her family. I know his untimely passing will leave a huge hole in your hearts. I hope the memories of your trips to Hawaii, your annual Indianapolis speedway adventures as well as all the other memories you made over the many years you were together will ease your pain and sorrow. You had a special relationship. You were both so lucky to have found one another. I wish I was there to hug you. My heart is with you, dear friend. I love you. (From Three Lakes, WI and Florida)

My heartfelt sympathy to Dan’s family and to Jan and her family. I’ve know Jan since grade school and we have stayed good friends through the years. When Dan came into Jan’s life over 22 years ago, he also came into mine. I will miss hearing Dan stories and knowing that they would have checked in with each other at the same time every night. What a wonderful tradition.

Love, Marilyn (Belleville)

Dear Sue, Jan, & Chris:
We are both sending our love and condolences to all of you. We will always treasure our memories of "Uncle Dan" at every holiday. Our fondest memory is the games and fun we had during holidays with the Groff clan. "Uncle Dan" was hard to beat at any game. He was always congenial and fun and especially handsome with his every hair in place white hair.
God has him in his keeping, you will always have him in your heart.

You had a huge impact on all our lives and we can’t believe we won’t spend one more New Years Eve together or take one more trip to the desert or Hawai’i with you and grandma. We treasure all our memories especially through the awesome videos you made for us. (Those are the only videos we have of our children.) We are so glad we have lots of photos to revisit all of our times together. We are all devastated and miss you terribly. We love you. Jennifer, Franco, Isa, Matteo & Ian
