Erwan “Wanou” John Eadward McKeown, died August 24, 2016 as a result of being hit by a truck while riding his motorcycle in Reseda, California. Erwan was 19, born, December 11, 1996 in Chartres, France. He was the first born child of Sophie Cécile Joëlle McKeown and Todd Crawford McKeown.
Erwan was a lovely and friendly individual who was always willing to help both his friends and family. He almost always had a big smile on his face and this brought a great deal of joy into other’s lives. One of his faults was that he had a very hard time saying no to anyone. He hated seeing anyone around him suffer. Erwan had a generous spirit and a big heart. “Erwan was an amazingly kind and caring person, who was the main person to help me after a life-threatening fall down a flight of stairs. I would NOT have made it out of my house without him or had water to drink. His kindness probably saved my life…” said his father’s friend, Ali Jane Johnson.
Erwan enjoyed life. He loved reptiles, particularly snakes. He found a gopher snake when he was 12 years old which he kept for years. He loved video games and was a huge fan of Star Wars. When he got his driver’s license, he got a big, red, Dodge Ram pickup. He loved the power and sound of the engine. Later, one of his favorite joys was to ride his Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle with his friends. Each day, when he came and left work at the Point Dume coffee shop in Malibu, Cafecito, he roared in and out on his motorcycle. As a result, he got the nickname at his workplace “Rocket Wan”.
Erwan moved to Malibu from France with his parents when he was 4 months old. He went back to France when he was 14 months old where he stayed with his mother for two years. When he was 18 months old he was speaking both French and English. He referred to English as speaking “Malibu.” When he was three, he returned to Malibu with his mother and the family was reunited. He attended Juan Cabrillo Elementary and Malibu Middle and High Schools.
Erwan is survived by his brother Guerric, sister Anaïs, his parents Sophie Cécile Joëlle McKeown and Todd Crawford McKeown, his grandmother, Yvette Hermeline, and uncles and aunts in both the United States and France.
The funeral will be held at the Malibu United Methodist Church, 30128 Morning View Drive Malibu, California, Monday, September 5th, 2016 10:00 AM. A reception will follow services at the church.
