Evelyn Eunice Bates was born in Lynn, Massachusetts to an elementary school custodian and a housewife. She had an older brother, Herbert and a younger brother, Wallace (Biff), who was 14 years younger than she was.
Evelyn was plagued with several childhood diseases of that era:
• Nasal Diphtheria
• Scarlet Fever
• Rheumatic Fever
• Of course, Measles, Chicken Pox and Mumps
After graduating from high school, Evelyn went to Salem Nursing School where she graduated in approximately 1941 as a Registered Nurse (RN). She went on to become supervisor of the pediatric ward at Union Hospital in Lynn.
On November 3, 1940, she eloped with her long time love, Harry O. Marshall. They were married nearly 51 years, until Harry’s passing on September 29, 1991.
Evelyn had 3 children, Douglas, Preston and Gale.
In 1962, after both boys graduated from high school and joined the military, Evelyn, Harry and Gale moved to sunny Winnetka, California. While there, she worked as an Emergency Room nurse at a couple hospitals and worked in Obstetrics as West Hills Hospital.
For over 10 years, she worked for the movie studios, primarily Universal, where she would go on locations with the movie companies. She would also work in the lot hospital, tending to the ills and injuries of the cast and crew who filmed on the lot. She worked on shows and movies like Knight Rider, Lucille Ball, Davy Crockett, Casino, Lost Flight (filmed in Hawaii). She didn’t often recognize the names of the stars, but she would come home with some good stories.
Harry and Evelyn enjoyed watching the Celtics, especially Larry Bird, taking cruises with friends, driving across country and spending time with family.
After Harry’s passing, Evelyn enjoyed working her crossword puzzles, reading the newspaper, watching the “judge” shows on TV and going to concerts in the park.
