Fred grew up in Ft. Collins CO and loved sports. He was an All-American wrestler in junior college. He moved to CA in his early 20s and took up the construction trades, first as a Drywall Carpenter, then General Contractor, and finally as a city Building Inspector. After his first retirement, he and Paula owned a closet design company for several years.
During Fred’s first marriage to Carol, he fathered three daughters and was step-dad to another. He loved coaching the girls in soccer and was an enthusiast of all sports, especially football. Notre Dame was ‘his’ team. He loved to dance and was often the life of the party.
Known as the bionic man, Fred endured many health challenges throughout his life and repeatedly bounced back, but the Alzheimer’s was unbeatable. Many thanks to Angel of God Hospice and sister-in-law Sharon Cofield, who took great care in his final days and were invaluable support to the family.
Fred is survived by his wife of 25 years Paula, daughters Deannie Wirtjes, Jill Henderson (Jeff), Laura Wagner, stepchildren Cindee Molenda, Shannon Barrick Colella (Antonio), Audrey Maxfield, and Joel Maxfield (Julie), grandchildren Nick, Samee, Braedon, Logan, Jake, Jordyn, Lauren, Lana, & Kent, his older brother Dick Gallegos, and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his faithful cats Sylvester & Mitzi. He was predeceased by his sister Anna Lucero.
Fred was a devout life-long Catholic and was involved with the Rosary makers from his church. His funeral Mass will be held at St. Jude the Apostle Church in Westlake Village on April 12, 2025, at 10 a.m.
