I'm a couple of years late hearing about Fred's passing. I met him in 1975. Somehow Fred heard that I had a Muntz Jet and contacted me. He trecked down to my loft in downtown LA to see it and convinced me to come with him out to Thousand Oaks to see if he had anything I would be willing to trade for. Fred eventually convinced me to swap with him for a Mills Empress Jukebox. He initially wanted my Muntz as a parts source for a Muntz he already had. I just discovered that he eventually did the opposite. I am so glad he did, it was wonderful seeing how beautifully he restored my old Muntz. I lost touch with Fred over the years but have often thought about him (and the car). I really wasn't interested in getting rid of the Muntz but with Fred's enthusiasm and lots of really funny stories about meeting "Mad Man Muntz" I gave in. So sorry to hear of his passing.   

I just now heard of the passing of Fred. My first introduction to jukeboxes was from him and they became my passion as well.  We also had a shared interest in old cars.  In 199,1 I moved to Montana and lost touch with Fred for about 10 years, we got in contact with one another again and I started receiving his newsletter which I enjoyed.  It was through the 'missing' newsletter that I found out he had passed.  My condolences go too Deanna and his family.

What comes immediately to mind, when I think of Fred, is that great booming laugh.   Because for me, that laugh conveyed the essence of the man and his outlook on life: see, comprehend, accept and enjoy.   He was inquisitive and sentimental and searching, and his soul was wide open to the world.   Fred had a strong sense of justice and he wanted to see things set right, yes.  He wanted the truth.  But it was his all-embracing love of life that was at his core, and it was that spirit that informed his laugh, and the laugh, for me at least, conveyed the essence of the man.   Whether it was cars, machines in general, wood-working, automata - whatever it was - Fred threw himself into the project right up to his neck and derived the greatest possible satisfaction from it.   He took a great many things into his hands and made them better.... took many beautiful things and gave them a new lease on life.  He appreciated the works of those who traveled this way before him and he preserved them for his children and for posterity.   He also created a great many things using his skills.   I think that, like Sinatra, Fred believed "in you and me, and in the oceans and the birds that fly over them.   In everything that we can see or reasonably believe to exist".  I do too, and that is why I miss him very much.

When I was a young boy(third grade) my family lived accross the street From Fred and Deanna Roth.
 I would go over to the Roth's house for reading and writting help, from Deanna, she was a great help to me!
Fred and myself would always talk about cars, I would look at his Hudson cars as he would strip them down, and rework the engines. I had never seen such a BIG cylnder bore as on a "Hudson Rocket" engine. he taught me so much.
Fred and Deanna were always a good neighbor to me and my family!

Sue and I met Fred and Deanna in 2007 while visiting a mutual friend in Thousand Oaks.  They gave us a tour of their home and collections, and we visited for quite a while that day.  We haven't been back to California since, but Fred and I have stayed in constant contact via email.  Fred was a person that even though you'd just met, you felt as if you've known him for a long time because of the many common interests and beliefs! We shared their heartbreak when we learned of the loss of their daughter, and we now share the sorrow of losing him.  Rest in peace, Fred, until we meet again.

Met Fred and Deanna through the pleasure of having Chris and Lisa as students in my High School Automotive Shop Classes.  It was always fun to spend time with the Roths, showing their cars, repairing or building something, dragging back to the homestead as another "Restoration Project" or just having a relaxing meal while sharing stories.

Rest easy we will meet again.

Fred had an enthusiasm for both great, rare cars but also fine music machines and juke boxes.  What always impressed me that he did all his own work on both. There was no mechanical challenge he could not meet and beat.  He was a true craftsman and a great friend.  I shall miss his sense of humor, laugh, and automotive knowledge.  Jane and I send our condolences to Deanna and  the family.  We shall always treasure the moments we had together.

Met Fred when I began teaching at Sutter Jr. High in Canoga Park.  On occasion he'd drive a beautiful black '52 Hudson Hornet Hollywood (rare hardtop model).  My dad had owned Hudsons, I'd driven one to college, so looked up the owner of the black Hudson & we became life-long friend beginning in '60.  He got me to join the Hudson Club & I've belonged ever since.  Deanna, Fred, my wife & I double-dated on occasion.

4 years ago I recieved an email from Fred asking if I was related to Phil Riepe he could not do the computer we talked Quite awhile, my husband. was slowly dying & couldn't talk.  Fred was delighted that we were who he was looking for.  My husband, he thought of him as his hero as he was the one who got him to start collecting cars.  He & Deanna came to Phil's celebration of life & later gave my son & I a tour of his collections.  We stayed in touch from then on.  What a wonder couple.  so generous in sharing their things.  He will be sorely missed.

Consummate hobbyist, mentor, friend.  Rest in peace.

We remember what a friendly and fun guy Fred was.  He was a great father to Chris and Lisa and he and Deanna were wonderful neighbors when we lived in Big Bear Lake.  He restored a pinball machine and set it  up for us and we had many hours of fun.  I loved his cars as well and enjoyed talking with him about them.
