I have only the sweetest memories of Aunt Gloria. Her sister Ruth (my grandmother) brought me for my first visit in the summer of 1972. My grandmother was very religious whereas Aunt Gloria was like a "hip" person - I remember being struck by their similarities and differences.

When I was ten Great Grandmother gave me $5 for my 10th birthday and I spent it at Magic Mountain to buy a rubber Frankenstein mask. The next morning I wore it into the kitchen where Aunt Gloria was fixing breakfast using the first microwave I'd ever seen. When she turned around, there I was -- the shortest & fiercest Frankenstein monster she'd ever seen... Looking back she couldn't possibly have been really afraid but she made me feel like I'd gotten the best birthday gift ever... ... she shrieked in fright!

When my beloved grandmother passed later that same year, Gloria remained my ongoing connection to her. Through-out the years she would call to check on me and my family; to see if we were doing OK especially if when watching the news there was a tornado with-in 200 miles of us -- that's the kind of person she was, I wish in my youth, I had been more like her and reached out more often...

An era is passing with Aunt Gloria that I am inadequate to fully articulate but fortunately I was able to share my favorite Aunt with my children, and they too got to eat breakfast with her, albeit minus the presences of Frankenstein... ...They just don't make'm like they use too!
