From humble beginnings in North Carolina, Hugh was the youngest of three children, excelling in school and graduating from UNC. A Sergeant in the United States Air Force, Hugh was a proud veteran who was recognized for his exceptional skill in developing early computer systems, and modernizing military data processing and supply operations for the Department of Defense. This work laid the foundation for Hugh's success in the private sector, leading technology teams throughout the world before founding his own technology firm, TMCO, with his wife, Linda. Hugh’s combination of discipline, tenacity, ingenuity, and Southern charm led him to become a successful entrepreneur at the forefront of computer science, pioneering technology integrations that became widely used in banking and distribution.
A lover of tennis, skiing, and golf, ultimately Hugh's most prized pastime was soaking up the sun at the beach or pool in Kauai. He loved telling jokes and stories just as much as listening to others’ stories. He built great and lasting friendships, loved his community, and was deeply devoted to the people around him. A board member of the Los Angeles Center Theatre Group for many years, Hugh was also a generous donor to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. In his later years, he enjoyed being a member of the Westlake Yacht Club.
Hugh left this world a proud father of six children, Hugh Jr., Terry, Lynne, John, Michelle, and Courtney, and a large extended family whom he loved very much. He was married to Linda Waters for more than 45 years until her passing in 2020, and he always found comfort in knowing they would be reunited one day.
Service for Hugh will be held June 23rd at Pierce Brothers at 3pm. In honor of Hugh and Linda, and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital through the Waters family donation page.
