Walter John Broscious, known as “Jack,” was born January 14, 1928 in Shamokin Pennsylvania, the seventh child of eight to be reared by parents Alice and Walter Broscious. He was a child of considerable energy and was active in sports including playing basketball and football his junior and senior years at Shamokin High School. After high school Jack joined the Navy in which he served for two years. His Navy tour on a troop transport brought him to China as well as San Diego. The GI Bill allowed Jack to study journalism at Penn State University with the hopes of becoming a sportswriter. The magnetic pull of great weather brought Jack back to California where he worked for General Motors at the Van Nuys manufacturing plant. He later landed a job working for the City of Los Angeles where he spent his career as a surveyor. Jack’s sense of adventure led him to travel the world, documenting his trips with his Minolta camera and sharing his slide shows and stories with family and friends. Jack met the love of his life Betty, and the two were married in 1974 at the Franciscan Renewal Center in Paradise Valley Arizona. Jack and Betty traveled the world together and became avid “Cruisers” completing more than 60 nautical journeys. In addition to travel, Jack was a very spiritual person and the Catholic community was a significant part of his and Betty’s life. Jack will be remembered by his family as a very kind and generous man who will be greatly missed.
