John’s life has been rooted in Agoura and Conejo Valley since early childhood. Educationally, he attended local schools Sumac Elementary, Lindero Canyon Middle School, before graduating from Agoura High School in 1987. His religious education also stems from the area, attending CCD and having his childhood sacraments at St. Jude’s in Westlake Village. John was a true product of Agoura and its surroundings.
Following high school graduation, John ventured south, completing his bachelor of arts degree in History and Political Science at the University of California, San Diego. Staying on the west coast, he went north, earning a Juris Doctor from his beloved University of Washington in 1994. Go Huskies.
John left the Pacific Northwest shortly after graduation to homestead back in Agoura, from where he spent his entire professional career serving a variety of local and regional governments in Southern California. He most recently worked at the Southern California Associate Government (SCAG) as a Sr. Regional Planner from 2006 - 2024.
John’s commitment to public service extended well beyond his professional endeavors. He volunteered a vast amount of his personal time to actively serve his community in Agoura Hills. Reaching to the broader Agoura community, John became a commissioner and later served as Chair of the Agoura Hills Planning Commission, helping to guide the city’s future. He was originally appointed in 2016 and was passionate about ensuring the city reflected the quality of life he grew up experiencing.
Additionally, John was able to connect his love for baseball with public service in his time and experience with Agoura Pony Baseball (APB). He initially started umpiring baseball games in 1985 and eventually became umpire in chief as an adult for 11 years, longer than any other APB umpire in its history. On the APB Board, he was known for his dedication to fairness and as a true guardian of the game.
From these experiences, John became a true pillar of the community.
Above all else, John was devoted to his family - a loving husband, father, son, and older brother. In 2001, he met Fulgene where they settled into a happy home in Agoura, welcoming their two sons James (2013) and David (2015). He was a doting husband and was always there for Fulgene, his family, and friends. He was a proud father who loved to watch his sons play on the baseball field.
He is preceded in death by his grandparents and sister, Grace Asuncion.
John is survived by his wife Fulgene and sons James and David, his parents Edward and Aida, and siblings Mark and Danielle.
The family would like to thank all of his family and friends, the City of Agoura Hills, and Agoura Pony Baseball for the care, compassion, and generosity they showed John and his family.
