Karen Janice Derderian, 63, passed away peacefully in her home in Agoura Hills on Sunday, January 4, 2015 with her loving daughter by her side, after her brave 8-month battle with breast cancer.

She was born in Fresno, California on January 27th, 1951. Soon after, her family moved to Whittier, where she grew up. After high school, she attended Beauty College.

Karen married her first husband, Gary Brakefield, in 1968 and had her only child, Robin Navonne in 1969. After her divorce, she worked in administrative positions and was a tremendous asset.

In 1972, she met her future husband and soul mate, Vigen Derderian. He was an international singer, so they traveled the world, performing concerts for the Iranian community. They were blessed to have met lifelong friends throughout the world and truly lived life to the fullest. Their love was a "true" love story.

When Karen's family members and close friends fell ill, she became an advocate, making sure they were getting the best care possible. She was dedicated to the comfort of others. She had a deep faith in God and was an inspiration to all who got to know her. Karen was known to her family and friends as a very strong, wise and kind soul.

Karen's love for Vigen was so strong that she took her last breath listening to the song he wrote and sang about their love. She was a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, cousin and friend. She will be greatly missed.

Karen was preceded in death by her father, Hershel Holston; mother, Mary Evon Stuart; step-father, Francis Stuart; husband, Vigen Derderian; sister, Gail Delmonico; great uncles, David Hodges & Doug Hodges; and great-aunts, Flora Hodges & Shirley Hodges.

Karen is survived by her daughter, Robin (Navonne) Johns; grandson, Austin Johns; brothers, Bryan Holston & Bruce Holston; sister-in-laws, Nancy Holston & Armineh Everette; brother-in-law, Dick Everette; great-aunt, Rita Hodges; nephews, Ryan Holston, Nathanael Holston, Aaron Underwood, Jordan Holston & Patrick Gaudet; nieces, Marie Holston & Nora Ann Holston; and great nephew, Jack Gaudet.

Karen was always someone who changed the atmosphere when she entered a room, so tall and statuesque. Always a lady, kind and attentive. We will all miss her.....for now.

I don't even know where to begin. i can never express in words what she meant to me. We met though our other best friend Fran 37 years ago. The 3 of us were like sisters. We have been through marriages, divorces, husband deaths, raising kids the list is endless. We have loved, cried, laughed and fought, but like all families we supported each other through everything. To say I am going to miss her doesn't begin to describe how I feel. Things will never be the same again. I know she is always going to watch over her family. All I can say is this Golden Girl will see you on the other side. We will be the Golden Girls for eternity.
I love you my friend.

Cross-country cousins, our paths crossed too infrequently. But too be sure, when they did, we were family and loved each other as if no time had passed between visits. You had that way about you. So special, engaging and endearing. You will be missed dearly. Rest in peace.
I have visions of the family reunion going on in heaven and I know Evon is having a giggle-fit right about now - followed by a nice, long "MERCY"!!

Karen, you and I had a very special and deep conversation in my car the last day that I spent with you. I will treasure you and that day forever. I love when I brought you home and you and I were cracking up at all the eye lashes you had all over the dresser. I never did order mine from the website. Lol You were the COOLEST woman forever in my heart my friend. I love you.

Karen, your warmth, gratitude, laughter, grace, and all the other attributes your spirit evokes, will lift me each time I think of you..

Navonne, you're the biggest piece of her heart.. You'll be assured by remembering she gave you roots and wings. Her strong faith and overwhelming love, pride and admiration for you will be felt all the more at the most unexpected times to share joyful moments, and provide strength and comfort..
