Mary Stone Newman was the daughter of George Gilmour Stone and Eleanor Duval Stone. She spent her childhood in Pomona CA as a member of the Congregational Church. She was editor of the Pomona High School yearbook in her junior year, and was elected Snow Queen for the Christmas Formal in 1954. Following her father, older sister Cynthia, and numerous other relatives, she attended Pomona College and graduated with a BA in International Relations. There she met her future husband, Peter Vincent Newman; they married in 1958 and set off for adventure together around the world.
Mary and Pete lived in Karachi, Midland, Jakarta, Westlake Village, Dallas, Denver, and Algiers, among other places. They visited many other exotic places while travelling around the world, and enjoyed visits to ski in Breckenridge and lie on the beach in Kauai. Mary enjoyed playing tennis and was a successful club player at the Westlake Tennis and Swim Club for many years. In her travels, Mary developed an interest in textiles, which she collected avidly. In 1987, she earned an MA in Art History at the University of Denver, writing her Thesis on Indonesian Batik.
Mary died comfortably in her sleep while in hospice care after a short illness. She is survived by her sons David and Michael, daughter-in-law, and two grandchildren.
