

Richard “Rich” Romine passed from this world on Wednesday January 19, 2022 in Oxnard, CA. Rich was born to Reverend Ned & Vera Romine on November 18, 1950 in Fullerton, CA. Rich attended McLane High School in Fresno and went on to graduate from Los Angeles Valley College. He first came to Ventura County after finishing his Bachelor’s degree in Journalism at Cal State University Northridge. Upon arrival he began his newspaper career with the Oxnard Press Courier, first as a part-time sports correspondent before being quickly promoted to full sports writer after only a month in February 1974. He later went on to become the sports editor of the paper in 1988. Rich then proceeded to work for the Ventura County Star from August 2000 to December 2015 where he covered youth and high school sporting events including races at the Ventura County fairgrounds. His passion for covering community sports made him become a fixture at most Ventura County athletic events. He was known by many throughout the community for his likeable personality and easy-going charm. Before his retirement in November 2017, he worked for the Santa Paula Times, continuing to cover high school and youth sports in the city. In recognition of his dedication to covering local area sports he received many honors and awards during his long career. Rich served on the board of directors for the Ventura County Sports Hall of Fame and was also a member of the Society of Professional Journalists. While Rich mostly enjoyed playing softball, ping pong and tennis he was a voracious fan of all types of sporting events. Rich was a frequent volunteer of the Ventura County Rescue Mission where he helped to serve food and cleaned tables at their Oxnard based rescue mission. In his passing Rich leaves behind his wife Theressa "Terri" of 39 years, his three children, Richelle, Stephanie and Nicholas Romine, and his sister Joanne Roberts.
