Born on August 8th, 1937, in Eureka, Kansas, to Marvin C. Shaw and Vera M. Shaw, Sherry’s faith was a guiding force throughout her life and influenced her approach to motherhood. As teen, her family relocated to Los Angeles, California, where she began her journalism career as a high school reporter, interviewing prominent figures such as Jimmy Durante. She earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from UCLA in 1960. Married in 1959, Sherry was the mother of two sons, Erin and Sean. Following her divorce, she demonstrated resilience and dedication, raising her children in accordance with Christian principles while balancing work and family responsibilities.
Sherry joined Trailer Life publishing company in 1972 quickly advancing to Senior Managing Editor through her exemplary journalistic abilities and strong work ethic. She often managed the editing of three magazines simultaneously for monthly publication and the Good Sam Directory. Her professionalism and proficiency in English were highly regarded by colleagues, many of whom became lifelong friends.
In 1984, Sherry met Fred Markel, with whom she shared a loving and adventurous partnership. Together, they traveled extensively across the United States and abroad, cherishing their time together and embracing optimism.
As the historian and archivist of her family, Sherry devoted considerable effort to genealogical research, fostering connections between past and future generations. As both mother and grandmother, she instilled enduring values and religious beliefs in her family, consistently leading by example. Her home was known as a place of warmth, prayer, and support for anyone seeking guidance or comfort. Sherry embodied unconditional love throughout her life.
Sherry found real joy in her daily reading, whether she was deep into religious texts or getting lost in a favourite novel. She loved playing games like Scrabble, bridge, and crosswords—not just for the challenge, but because she gave her all and valued a bit of healthy competition. Gathering around a game with family and friends wasn't just routine for Sherry; it was something she cherished for the laughter, connection, and memories they created together.
Sherry is remembered fondly as a devoted daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, wife, mother, grandmother, friend, mentor, and Christian. May she rest in peace.
