A. Vincent J., 92, of Harrington Park, NJ, formerly of Westchester County, NY, died on Wednesday, July 3, 2013.
He was the beloved husband of the late Gloria M. Burzi (nee Volpe). Devoted father of Anthony and Stephen Burzi and Grace A. Hayes. Cherished grandfather of Thomas and Michael Burzi and Wilson C. Hayes III. Loving brother of Giusseppina Burzi (Jamila Salimpour) and uncle of Suhala Salimpour.
Mr. Burzi served during WWII with the Army Air Corps from November 1943, through April of 1946, entering as a First Lieutenant. After intense training in the field of climatology / meteorology, he served as Weather Officer. His duties included making forecasts and acting as liaison between weather station and group headquarters. In this capacity he accumulated over 400 flight hours in weather missions. His expertise and proficiency in weather forecast and analysis helped make each combat flight mission a little safer for our pilots during this conflict. Mr. Burzi received the Service Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
Mr. Burzi's educational endeavors were as distinguished as his wartime experience, and he continued his studies, always related to science and mathematics, in constant pursuit of academic excellence. During his enlistment he graduated from University of California at Los Angeles with a degree in Meteorology. Later he earned his undergraduate degree, a BS in Electrical Engineering, from The College of the City of New York, and then a MS in Electrical Engineering from Columbia University.
Mr. Burzi's professional career as an electrical engineer and later as a nuclear engineer spanned 41 years and took him to diverse places around the globe. He worked on the design and operation of electrical instrumentation and controls of Power Generating Plants/Stations and Nuclear Power Plants in Italy and Japan, and various commercial and government facilities all over the United States. Among the better-known plants were Elk River, Three Mile Island, North Anna, Con Ed IP-2, and the Surry Nuclear Power Plant in Surry, Virginia. Most notable, he did design work on nuclear submarine research for the U.S. Navy, and his work led to technology that was eventually incorporated into the instrumentation for the USS Nautilus, the first nuclear submarine for the U.S. Navy.
Vincent was respected and loved by those who had the privilege of knowing him and will be missed by all.
The family will receive friends at Becker Funeral Home, 219 Kinderkamack Road, Westwood, NJ, on Tuesday, July 9, 2013 in the evening from 7- 9 PM. A service will be held the next morning at 10 AM, followed by the entombment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, NY.
